Interested in a X-Type Wagon.
I have been looking at X-type Wagons for the past 6 months, and recently found an 05 for sale with about 40K miles. The Dealer is asking $14K. My credit union says it is only worth $10K. It has the premium package, Bluetooth, Navigation, cold weather package, and DSC. I offered $12K, but the dealer believes he has a cream puff on his hands, and wont drop the price below $13,5K. Car appears to be in excellent condition with all the scheduled services and maintenance.
Thoughts on what this car is worth?
I am looking to pick up a car that my wife can drive in the winter and I can use to drive up to the local ski resort. (The wagon fits skis nicely in back) At $14K I can purchase a Range Rover Sport HSE with 75K miles.

Every car is different but as a comparison we paid $9k for an 05 wagon with 68k miles and the same options as this one except navigation. Car was in great shape.
That was 18 months ago, 87k miles now and has been reliable with no major issues, just tires, brakes and battery. Good in the snow, (we usually gets lots here in northern Utah).

It is a very classy and unusual car and that is special. You will be noticed whenever you show up with that car. The $ may seem significant now, but a year from now after you have met so many people who say: "I didn't even know Jaguar made a station wagon" you will have forgotten about the price.

Thanks for the input so far. Besides the "uniqueness" factor, I am looking for an AWD car that actually handles well in the snow/plowed roads. I am considering a Range Rover LR3 or perhaps an Audi Allroad. In the same model year range, I have found other brand vehicles with similar mileage, for about the same price. If I purchase a LR3 Rover, I will have experience working on the AJ series engine. For winter driving where I live these days, I'de feel guilty driving a nice X-type wagon in the snow, exposing it to lots of Mag-Chloride. But, if the price is right versus the need, I wouldn't mind having one.
Nice forum discussion with Top Gear review of Wagon.

Tijoe,
I work at my local ski area and so drive back and forth a lot, and can tell you the x-type does great in the snow. Only issue I have had is in 2+ feet of fresh snow on a parking lot that hadn't been ploughed and the low ground clearance prevented me getting out of the parking spot that I was in all day, while it was snowing. I got pulled out, about ten feet and after that I was fine. Everyone else there had the same issue and the ski area trucks were pulling their cars out.
I can tell you that the DSC makes a big difference. I watched my wife driving on 1/2 inch solid ice across the whole road and could see it working, alternately braking the wheels. She didn't even notice.
Here's a Top Gear test of the DSC in an x-type.

I never knew the X-Type estate was so sought after in the US? They are great looking cars, popular over here and can be bought for ~£4000 for a 2006 model. The estates do hold their money over the saloon. I have a saloon but have a mate who has a 2008 estate, lovely looking car and drives great. I don't need another X-Type but if I did, I'd buy a top of the range estate in Green.
Great car for the money!

I am starting to shy away from purchasing an X-type wagon. Dealers selling wagons with the options and mileage I want are asking top dollar. The asking prices are high enough that I am considering an Audi Allroad or Range rover. As far as I can tell, An Audi Allroad, blows the doors off of the X-type wagon in regards to handling and power. (X-type looks better.) Range Rovers are in a different class of vehicles.
I love Jaguars, but there are a lot of other cars out there that fit my driving needs.
