Yeah well I'm sort of thinking it has something to do with the cooler as that is a place that is moist....

The needle on the temperature gauge when the car is cold moves from the zero point to just a tiny bit past halfway and stays there. Shouldn't go down and back to halfway while driving. That isn't what you typically see. If the car starts to overheat is pretty much moves from the halfway point to overheating. Not really any in between where the needle would move slightly higher. The gauge is not linear.

oh right, so could be the sender like yarpos said or the thermostat...
Went past the garage last night and it was closed early.

I had a thought though, I know for sure that my power steering pump is leaking quite badly and it seems to have gotten worse since I changed that hose, is it possible that the coolant could be leaking via a seal between the water pump and PS pump and coming out with the PS fluid?

By the way thanks for all the replies 😊

My first two suspects would be leaking around the water pump shaft, or one of the nipples on the coolant tank is cracked. Then there is a small piece under the throttle body that does something with coolant, not sure if the 2.0 has that tho.

Are the gauges in out cars true gauges or idiot gauges. What I mean by that is the red light that came on when it was to hot, was called an idiot light. Many of the new cars do the same thing with a gauge, the gauge go to 1/2 way and stays there. If it gets to hot it goes all the way up...idiot gauge.

The gauge is a "comfort gauge" - designed for the comfort of the driver. It is designed to move the needle to a position just below the centre of the gauge ("normal") and to have the needle remain in that position through the entire range of normal operating conditions. As an example, it is perfectly normal for engine temperature to rise on a hot day when the car is moving at a fast speed up-hill. In the X-type ( and any modern Jaguar with a temperature gauge - some do not have them!) the gauge will always read "normal" regardless of the actual temperature of the engine UNLESS the temperature is outside designed "normal" parameters. In that case the needle will move directly to the hot end of the gauge dial and by that time the engine is close to over-heating, if it has not over-heated already. Not good. An aware driver, observing a rising temperature reading, will take steps to protect the engine, but if he is given no warning, how can he do so?

mrjagger90 It happen to my 04 X, if your car kept lost the coolant but don't see it drift on the ground, that mean head gasket was broke, drain the oil to see if any coolant will come out first? The coolant is heavier than oil, if it came in to the engine it will stay down the bottom of oil pan, if this is happen: The big job ahead, replace head gasket is not hard, but just time consuming, you have to remove almost entire engine
