Potential Jag Owner - Advise Please
Hello Jag forum,
Seeking a little advise while I rummage through the FAQ.
A little history on me - was a Honda/Acura guy for a long time. My car got stolen in Feb. and I have been on a motorcyle ever since. Unfortunately, my bike has to retire for the winter and in my search for AWD cars, I came across what I think is a good deal for an 02 X-type. The car has 62k miles, single owner vehicle and is being sold by a BMW dealer in as-is condition for $8k out the door.
I talked to a mechanic who advised me to run in the opposite direction fast (high cost of maintainance), but I tend to not believe everything he says, so I am here. What do you guys think? I know the 02 was the premiere model and not all the kinks may be worked out, I read a couple of concerns about the transfer case and the recommendations for extended warranty. Is this a good deal? What about the fact the dealer is selling in as-is condition? I will mainly use the vehicle in the winter (less than 5k miles a year). I am going to look at the car tomorrow. Thank you for your time in advance.

Hey dman.........welcome to the forum.
X type 02 was what I had...........great car especially for the AWD.......02's had a few teething probs although you can still get a good one. A warranty just for the TC is a must really.
A few other minor issues to look out for really, check out the X type FAQ quick links in the X type section for loads of info on the X which you may find useful.
Good luck
Jim

what options on the car? there is a quite a difference in the base model compared to a loaded sport model. Is it a 5 speed or slush box?
I will advise more when you let us know what car we are looking at.

Firstly, Internet forums are almost exclusively a WRITTEN form of communication.
Secondly, it is a JAGUAR forum... English is important.
Thridly, if we dont keep language in check... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can't imagine it.
Hahaha .. if you are going to type you're try an apostrophe and not a quotation mark!
Actually the advice/advise word just was in a couple of posts next to each other. Clearly the posters dont know the difference. If we dont point it out, then they will asssume there is no mistake, and continue to use the word incorrectly.

I honestly do not know where the grammar issue came from butI would like tobring it back on topic.
bojangles,
This is a base model with a 5 speed transmission. The body looked flawless and it drove really nice.
The dealer will not give a warranty for that price. He admitted he did not know very much about Jags (it is a BMW dealership) but that the TC issue should be better with the manual transmission. Any truth to that? How much would a third party warranty be?

Grammar issue came from poor grammer... duh? My grammar is average, but I do spot the glaringly obvious mistakes. I also tend to type quickly and I dont always fix typos... I write in phrases, not sentences. I live by a combination of other people's rule and my own rules.
Back to your car , the 5 speed makes the decision much easier. The car is good with a manual tramsmission, and you should not have major $$$$ problems. That being said with the years and miles on that car, you may experince an onslaught of typical problems.
I would look in to the service records if they exist and see what pcv hose, Imt o-rings and brake booster hose has been changed, If you cant find evidence of them being replaced, take agood look at them or just change them.
I would do a thermostat, and coolant flush, brake fluid change, and take a look at the the car will easily go another 60k miles without any big issue with all that done.
Overall at that mileage you should start pads and discs.
Get all the oils changed, transmission, transfer case, powersteering and differential.
Depending on the climate, you will need a battery, and maybe rear outer CV joints. (they rust and the abs sensor falls off)
I would say that you need to understand two things..
It is a Jag and it should drive smoothly, quietly, without rattles or vibrations or shakes.
It is a Jag and it will have roughness, noises shakes and rattles.....
what I mean is that you need to deal with problems as they occur, keep on top of them and you will always be driving a nice car.
If you are going to winter drive the car, (and you should WITH winter tires) get the rocker panels pumped full of rust protection... quickly before you drive the car in the salt and slush.
