the 02's had some bugs... i would suggest an 04 or newer. remember, just because the car may cost 12K the parts, labor, and maintenance are still Jaguar prices. It seems that most people forget this when they purchase a car.

Check out MSN Autos. They rate the 2002 X-Type as a 5/5 in reliability although it says there is an occasional problem with the mass air flow sensor in both the 2002's and 2003's.

I can only speak with my experience from Jaguar but my 2004 so far has been perfect. It drives well, its comfortable, and its fit and finish is pretty good. The only real problem I can think of is, in the trunk, there is only one tiny light - not enough to seek in the dark. As you can see, it isn't much of a problem.

Do as much research as possible and require a CarFax report from the dealership. Test drive it and have it checked out by a mechanic and make sure any recalls, if applicable, have been repaired to factory specification. Best of luck to you.

oh the 02-03's.... where to start. First the small things, the defroster vents pop up and the only way to fix them is with super glue. The mass airflow thing that Psych mentioned. The have weak transmission's (I don't know if they ever updated this). They only have one cup holder.

Now the big issue, In the 02-03 the rocker panels are known to rust. The X-Type sits nose down, the front of the car sits lower then the rear. I don't know if there is a reason for this or just for style. What happens is that during winter conditions salt water gets into the rocker panels. The water is supposed to drain out of drainage holes in these panels. The problem is that on the 02-03 the front two drain holes are sealed. This means that the salt water just sits there causing the car to rust. It is undetectable unless you remove the plastic guards on the bottom of the car and inspect it once a year or so.

In 2004 they fixed this issue (and kept it quite) so the car will not rust. See this post. I had this very problem and know a lot about it. I know have a 2005 X-Type.

The one advantage to the 02-03 is that they have a 50/50 AWD system. IMO it drives a lot better then the new AWD system.

I think somebody once mentioned it was 60/40 now. Don't hold me too it, though.

I think the X type (all years) have alwaysbeen 60/40..otherwise there would never have been a need for a Viscus Coupling in the TC.

I have an 02. Once the usual suspects are repaired, it is a good car. At 50k, chances are the tranny issues, TC issues, vents, seat bracket, propshaft, rear diff, maybe rear control arms...(what am I forgetting?) have most likely been fixed or were not a problem on that particular car.

Most of my repairs came between 20k and 40k. The rust issue on the rockers is hit or miss. Mine are fine, and I've had the sills off several times, but it was a southern US car. But it can be a serious problem.

One thing to consider is that the car is out of warranty and is 6 years old. I extended the factory warranty on mine to 100k or 2010. Worth it.

Not manyproblems on my 2002 3.0 Sport
Hada speed sensor corrode and come off a couple of years back (£148 for new outer CV joint fitted cured this)
LH heater vent pops up on mine but no big deal (superceeded vent available from dealer if it bothers you thatmuch or glue down)
Tyre wear common on inside edges...wide tolerance on settings but no probs since tracking set to straight ahead (and still within Jags tolerances)
No probs with transmission even though dynoed at 241.6 Bhp
Only other parts (replaced due to wear and tear 65-75k miles) were the LH rear lower arm bushes (new rear lower arm cured this andis inexpensive), new rear ARB bushes (around £15 the pair and 1/2hr max to fit even if difficult to remove like mine due to seized bolts), new front stabiliser arm (£5 off ebay same as Ford Mondeo Mk3)
Great car overall and next car is going to be another one

here is what i know as far as the AWD goes. The 03 i had: when i was at a stand still and mashed the gas pedal all four wheels spun. the 05: when i was at a stand still and mashed the gas only the rear wheels spun at first then the front kicked in. this sparked some interest in the issue for me. I found out that the 02-03 had a full time 50/50. they said it was 60/40 but it was 50/50 for the most part. The 04 and up had a different set up. I remember FJT explained it to me a while ago. Sice he has gone MIA, I will have to search the post to find out how he explained it to me.

Welcome,

Personally I would never pay 12k at a dealer for an 02. That price is too high for the year. I've seen 2004/5 sport 3.0's for around 14k under warranty. If I remember correctly ancientskirt's mom got a sport (02/03) from a jag dealer for around 15k one or two years ago.

Personally I would consider the 2002 as an option, as others have said by now most problems have been fixed. My 2002 never had any major problems and I'd just make sure you get a warranty if it isn't already covered, irregardless of what year it is.

As long as you go into this knowing full well that you are getting a great car at a great price that may have problems (as every car does) the car is a great catch.

My 2002 sport (when it was wet or snow covered) the rear end would come out on me (unless the dsc-dynamic stability control is on.) When in a parking lot and flooring the car it would do half donuts that turned more into a drift but it felt more rwd than awd (I loved it that way.) Irregardless the car is a great winter driver especially when it's about the same price as a grand prix.

I personally recommend making sure the perspective car has DSC, it's located near the cupholders near the shifter (button that has car with swerve marks behind the car.) These feature is standard on the sport, which IMO looks the best.
