Default Question: Torque converter alignment?

After spending an insane amount of time into restoring my 2.5L X-Type 2004 (with Jatco JF506e tranny), I have now a massive ATF (automatic transmission fluid) leak.
I had removed the transfer case and the transmission to get to the REAR crankshaft seal, which was leaking, and I replaced that.
While being at it, I also swapped all transmission and transfer case seals and O-rings along the way - as a result I have now ATF leaking (2 drops per second after driving, hence: massive leak!)
That leak was not there before, and it does not makes sense after having swapped all seals and O-rings.

But I just stumbled across a note in the X400 Workshop manual, on page 1529, regarding reassembly of the transmission, specifically the torque converter into the transmission:
"Align torque converter and oil pump drive before installing the torque converter!"
I did not know anything about that when I reassembled everything. I was simply sliding the torque converter back on...
Does someone have in-depth insight into what that exactly means (aligning the torque converter), what I should have done, if I caused any serious damage by not having done that (did I e.g. damage the new seal and O-ring behind the torque converter?) and if this is now a matter of removing the transmission again to "align" the torque converter?

Thanks.

I just started to take my tranny (Jatco JF506E) off AGAIN, due to the above mentioned transmission fluid leak (I did not find time before).
I am adding this post here to see, if there is still no one, who can advise on my question above...
I have seen a general torque converter installation video on youtube, and it looks like "sliding" the torque converter onto the tranny seems to be some special art...

Whenever I install a Torque Converter in a gearbox, I stand the unit on it's 'tail' so I can drop it STRAIGHT DOWN and engage all the splined shafts and pump drive dogs.(twist it around while lifting/dropping a little at a time)

Thanks Bob,

When I initially did this, I did not know about the "3 stages" - I just put it back on. And now the ATF is leaking like crazy.

1.) Do you have a technical explanation for that massive leak, which I have now, as a consequence of not putting the torque converter on 100% correctly, i.e. paying attention to those 3 stages (click (shaft 1), click (shaft 2), click (pump drive))?

2.) And can you confirm that the rotary position does not matter (i.e. if the 2 shafts and the pump drive are e.g. in a 3 o'clock position, it does not matter that I put the torque converter back on in an e.g. seven o'clock position)?

Thanks...

Trying to install a torque converter in the horizontal position defies gravity so I try to work WITH gravity.
The seal may have become damaged when offering up the unit attempting to align the shafts?

The torque converter does not have any bearing on any position except splines and driving dogs.
Then you can align the bolt holes to the TQ drive plate.

Bob, can you please explain the sentence above - I don't get it...

The Torque Converter has threaded holes that need to align with the fastener holes in the drive plate (aka 'flexplate') on the crankshaft.

You just 'spin' the TC until the holes line up.

AH, yes, I understand that sentence now. Thanks.

However, during re-assy of the tranny to the engine I would not know how to spin the TQ... - instead I am slowly rotating the drive-plate by slowly turning the nut on the harmonic balancer (front end of the crank shaft) with a big ratchet.... - I hope that this not wrong?

When the gearbox and engine are mated, you can turn the engine and TC independently until you install the fasteners.

You still need to align the holes in a 'window' for access to the fasteners.
I always get one fastener hole in the drive plated aligned with a way to get a bolt in the TC, then spin the TC to get holes lined up.
Thread one fastener 'finger tight' and rotate the engine to the next fastener, then next until they are all installed and then tighten them 'round-and-round' in sequence.
