How much are you willing to spend to get the lighter interior? To change out the interior yourself, you are looking at about $1500 or so. To me, that is too much to spend to change the color. For that much, you can send the car off to an upholstery shop and for around $2000, get true leather interior in the exact color you want and they would probably be able to swap out a lot of the other pieces too to make it all look right.

bigcat, I know what you are going through. Just take my three step advice with buying an x type
1: know what you want (you have that down)
2: Don't Settle for sub par
3: Be patient.
and on that same train of thought, I just came across a car that you would love, but unfortunately the owner was just as picky as you when picking it out so there is no way to get him to budge off of his pickings :P
Good luck

This is a list of things I want:
-light interior
-manual trans
-heated seats
-exterior: not red or blue
If I found one with manual trans, dark interior with heated seats, how hard would it be to change most of the interior light? Seats, console, door trim etc?
OR
If I found one with light interior and no heated seats, how hard is it to install heaters? With factory switches? This sounds like the cheapest/easiest option.

This one is close but I'm sure you've been checking the listings.

Finding the manual trans is probably going to be the biggest challenge.

YES!!!! Patience is the key here. I was in pretty much the same situation as you. I know EXACTLY what I wanted (2005/3.0 liter/sport/carbon fiber/manual/Aruba wheels) and wasn't in a particular hurry. Saw a few manuals, but usually were more than I wanted to pay. Took me almost 6 months. The one I ended up buying was about 500 miles from home. I flew down there to buy it and driove it back. Kind of scary buying something that far away, but it worked out for me. Car has been fantastic and now has just a tick under 100K miles and is running better than ever. Just be cheking the usual websites regularly and sooner or later you will find just what you want posted. When you find it, you will know. Just let us know what you end up with. Good luck!

That's how I found my truck actually. I started found out I wanted a dakota at 14 and was ready to buy whenever I found what I wanted (I had been saving pennys since I was about 8 for a vehicle). Then one day it showed up on autotrader, called the guy, my dad drove me to ohio to get it and it's in my driveway today. I'm sad it has to go, but it's a decision I made. I do know that the original owner has a new coat of paint and garage waiting for it at home though!
