Question S-Type 3.0L engine to replace an X-Type 3.0L engine?

Good idea? Bad idea?

My wife has a 2005 X-Type. Engine knocking, diagnosis is the engine is gone. About 150k miles. I found an S-Type engine I really like, reputable seller, but now I'm getting cold feet. Both engines have an A in the 8th position of the VIN, which seems to mean something. (I just see ebay listings that specify that, maybe the version of engine or something?)

The oil pan is different and would need to be changed, and I believe that the 3.0L is mounted inline in the S-Type, but transverse in the X-Type. So that could be a problem. Plus, the X-Type is all wheel drive, and the S is rear wheel drive, so there might be fundamental differences there.

Anyone know id this can be done? Or should I just look for an "A" version X-Type engine?

(Quick substory is that I found a reasonably priced, low mileage S-Type R I would have bought. But we had a weekend trip, It was gone that Mon when we got back. Ugh. )

Yes a S-type 3L engine can be used. It will be a lot of work. This swap has been done. Search the forum for X-type engine swap.

Some of the things that have to be changed off the top of my head.
- Water pump is driven off of one of the camshafts. You have to swap out your old water pump assembly and shaft that mounts to the camshaft.
- Head cover has to be changed.
- Intake manifold all of its associated parts.
- Probably the flex plate and torque converter.
- Most of the accessory mounts and accessories,
- Engine harness and likely the spark plug coils and probably many of the engine sensors.

Project is relative to doing a long block replacement
Good luck.

Thank you, Honesty, that list is long enough that I don't want to even try. Thanks!

Then best to find a running 3.0 X-type engine.

Found the link to the thread where a LS 3.0 engine was installed in an X-type
Scope of work is basically the same as putting in a S-type engine.

That's pretty cool. I had actually wondered what it would take just to get a "std" Ford Duratec V6 in there, but this is an even better idea.

The AJ series Duratec based engine is significantly different than the Ford Duratec and Mondeo engines. Very different heads: Jaguar and LS V6 versions use the direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) heads and the Duratec use roller finger followers (RFF). Duratec 4.0 engines put out about 20 HP less than the AJ sereis engines.
Way too much work to try to put in a Duratec engine into a X-type
Both Lincoln LS engines, 3.9L V8 and 3.0 LS V6 engines are Jaguar AJ derivatives.
