Default Security failed code 2004 XTYPE

Hello Everyone,

I need help again. I have two keys but do not have a FOB for my xtype.

  • One of the keys only unlocked the doors and turned the ignition on but does not start the car
  • The second key had opened the locks and started my car
Yesterday I tried to start the car and it turned on but immediately turned off and gave me the "Security Failed" error code. The control panel lights up but the car does not start.

My question is about ordering a key set and Key FOB off of ebay. If I do get a new set, can I reprogram the keys and FOB myself and are there any instructions on how to do it if it is possible. I really need this asap as this is my only vehicle and I will be bumming rides to work

P.S. I am very limited on funds. So the least expensive ideas would be nice

Thank you

I thought they wouldn't start without the fob.

Key fobs only do the fancy things like unlock the door, trunk etc. The key itself has a chip in it. You can start a car without a fob but you can not without a programmed key. My key was working just fine and just stopped working and gave me that error code "Securtity failure" I have looked on the web as well as on you tube and on this site. The error code that correlates with the LED sensor is 15 or B1601 on the ...
PATS Customer fault code flowcharts.
· B1681 - fault code 11 (Pages 5, 6, 7 and 8)
· B1600 - fault code 13 (Pages 9 and 10)
· B1602 - fault code 14 (Pages 11, 12, 13 and 14)
· B1601 - fault code 15 (Pages 15, 16 and 17)
· U2511/U1900 - fault code 16 (Page 18)

I just dont have any clue if I can get my key working or if this key could be used to reprogram any new Jag key I have cut since it is not being accepted.

Unfortunately there isn't a simple solution for getting a new key. It has to be programmed to the vehicle. This has to be done at a dealer or thru a locksmith that has the capability to cut the key and do the programming. It is unusual for a key to be working and then suddenly not work. I am afraid the problem maybe with the SCLM module. The security control and locking module is what recognizes the key and tell the ECM that it can start the car.
Try to find an independent Jaguar shop that can read the modules and find out what the problem is. I doubt the key is the problem.
You may want to try a hard reset of the computers. Take the negative cable loose and touch it to the positive cable. This will set the computers back to default.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

After posting earlier I had one other thought. You need to make sure that the battery is fully charged and in good condition. Jaguars do all kinds of crazy things when the battery is low or needs replacement. Starting the car pulls a lot of power from the battery and if it doesn't recover soon enough after starting it wreaks all kinds of havoc.

I had noticed the day before the car issue started that when I turned the ignition on it sort of felt like it stuck a little. When I did the security fault test the key again felt like it tugged a little. I dont know if that my be of any concern but it used to turn smoothly, that is why i noticed.

You could try lubricating the ignition switch just to be sure it isn't causing the problem. The only real troubleshooting will be to get the module codes read. It's a wild guess but you might also go thru the fuse boxes and check for any blown fuses.

How do you lubricate the ignition switch? It is really tugging. Does it call for removing it?

Insert the tip of the key into the switch that will open the door to the switch. It is a small plate that closes off the switch when the key is removed. Then spray the lubricant thru the opening.
