Default shifting cable

We just had the transmission overhauled on my 2000 x-type 4.0 (v-8) and the cable needs to be adjusted or replaced. Currently reverse works, but I have to shift it into second then to 4th, before I can put it into drive. The problem is how do we get to that cable? The guy thought he could do it from underneath but not possible. Can any body help?
Thanks

you take the steel curb protector off the bottom of the trans to expose the shifter cable and its adjustment...this isnt the same guy who rebuilt the trans is it
with the trans in nuetral and the shifter in nuetral, loosen the set bolt to relieve tension, then retighten. reinstall cover and youre done

Jane, are you SURE you have an X-Type...and that it is a 2000 model? I think you meant to post this in the S-Type forum.

Nice!!!! and with a 4.0 V8, now we're talking.....shows you how close of attention I was paying
ON the Stype there are 2 things to be aware of
1) the cable go bad, the sheath down by the trans pulls from the crimp part of the bracket on the trans and your adjustment will never stay. if its pulled back replace it,
2) you adjust the cable inside the car on a stype. remove the console top and access the 2 lock nuts on the cable. adjust as needed again in nuetral till the cable gives EQUAL freeplay on both sides of nuetral. personally I would replace the cable due to issue of them loosening and they can defintily cause trans failure from not having the trans fully in gear(even though the shifter looks like it is) If the trans CLICKS cannot be felt as you slowly move the shifter through ALL settings including the J gate on the left it is not adjusted correctly!!!
