Default Spark Plugs

I ordered a set from an Online OEM Jag parts dealer for my 2003 2.5 X Type, and they sent me regular ol' NGK TR55 (3951). Some came with damaged threads and one was obviously seated before, with anti-sieze residue on the threads.

Needless to say, there's NO way I'm installing these.

That said, every site I've checked say NGK TR55s aren't compatible with the 2.5 engine.

What plugs should I use here? I thought I was "going oem", but so much for that.

Default Spark Plugs

Evening,
I'm a newbie here and ordered new spark plugs yesterday. So I will pass along the information I was given. You may want to look into Double Platinum spark plugs and the following brand:
Autolite APP605, NGK, Bosh 4005, Denso 4511, MotorCraft SP459. I ordered 6 the Autolite plugs from ebay for $25.00 with free shipping.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. The autolites look to be perfect.

That said, the customer relations emailer at the OEM parts dealer seemed surprised that they'd sent me bottom of the barrel spark plugs, and said I should have received Denso double platinums, which they're sending me right away. I wonder why an OEM Jag parts dealer would even stock crap nickel alloy plugs?

NGK Laser Iridiums are what I put in my X. Gaped them at .052 and haven't had any issues.

Here's a couple eBay listings - 4 Autolite APP605 Double Platinum for $14.50 with S&H. That's $3.65 each - hard to beat. You'll see sales like this pretty regularly for 4 packs and 2 packs:

4 Autolite APP605 Double Platinum Pro 5 Year Plugs | eBay

4 Autolite Spark Plug APP605 Double Platinum Set of4 Plugs Pack of 4 | eBay

Thanks for the replies!

I will now name the company that I bought the plugs from, due to the outcome.

It was Jagbits.

I sent an email yesterday requesting a return, expecting them to have me ship the old back, blah blah blah.

They responded in minutes, apologized for the error, told me to toss the plugs they sent, and they overnight-ed me double platinum Densos, which I just received.

Keep in mind, I was exceptionally docile in my email and the only aggressive action was theirs, aggressively taking care of me.

Well done, Jagbits! Lots of future purchases coming your way.

I never did much research on plugs and threw in NGK 5809 TR6AP-13 Laser Platinum Plugs. Are these okay?

Jaguar branded and only $16 for the 6.

I've made some purchases with Jagbits and never ran into any issues. In talking to Gary on the phone, I'm not surprised he took care of you quickly and without issue. He's fair, honest, upfront and for me that equals someone who runs his business ethically and with integrity. I'll happily pay a little more for the piece of mind.

91stealthes - You'll be fine as long as you gaped them within spec.
The only difference between the Platinum's and the Iridiums is the electrode tip.

Thermo shared his advice with me awhile back on not going with splitfires, Bosch Platinum Plus, or other plugs with multi-prongs, simply because the X can be finicky and not appreciate the new plugs the way it should. Having more than one prong seems to agitate the igniting and combustion efficiency for some and the X doesn't run great, sometimes bucking or misfiring. Others have reported that they've had no issue with these plug types. So it's a matter of experience and preference. I'd say multi-prong plugs don't significantly improve performance and if they do it's minimal and unnoticeable, so if you threw in the Platinum's I think you'll be 100% fine. You shouldn't notice a difference and NGK's are pretty good quality plugs.

Worst case, if the car runs crappy or begins to randomly misfire you'll know it's the plugs and it's either the gap, a bad plug, or the Platinum's just aren't working out. I don't imagine that'll be the case though. How long have you had them in and are you having any issues?

Thank you!

I've had them in for almost 4,000 miles with no noticeable issues.

I was throwing in a brand new engine, so I wanted to keep everything OEM, so I ordered the Jaguar plugs without any investigation. Glad to hear it should all be well.

Being I purchased this vehicle for my wife, I hardly ever drove it before I got it back on the road. What should I be getting for gas mileage? I just ran the numbers and I have averaged exactly 20 mpg since I installed the new engine. Is this about right, or do I need to do some cleaning of some of the reused parts?

Depending on where you're looking some will say 18-25mpg others will say more around 16-22mpg.

For arguments sake I'd say 16-20mpg in the city, more nearing 17 or 18mpg. Then 20-25mpg on the highway, more nearing 20-22mpg. You might hit a 25mpg daily average if you're driving long distances on straight roads with cruise control engaged running premium gas, in my opinion. I haven't been that lucky. I think 16-22mpg is more realistic under typical driving conditions. I do 80% city driving and I'm usually hanging around 16.8-17.4mpg. I have to replace my lower intake, though, so I might be running a little shy of what my average should be.

I am actually going to be replacing the plugs in xtype soon myself. I always put iridium plugs in my cars, so I suggest doing the same if possible. I go for a single spark point as well... Electricity flows through the path of least resistance... Having more points is usually silly from what my research has shown... Many cars are stubborn on heat index, so I usually try to keep that stock... Anyone know the stock heat index on the plugs?

I still haven't done the job yet, too busy lately, but I've been wondering about something.

Have any of you torqued the plugs to 7.37 ft lbs then had them loosen over time? I ask because that's a pretty low torque spec, and I read from another poster somewhere that he had the issue when using that low a torque setting.

I've always just hand tightened the plugs with some anti-seize and never noticed any backing out.
