if your going to pull out the cluster check to see if a tracer on the circuit board is broke that runs to or near the fuel gauge/ speedo. I use a magnifying glass and a strong light You should be able to see if it has cracked or raised off the tracer, sometimes it's just a dark line or a bubble. It might have a coating over it that you have pick at, just take a sharp object ( I used a old dental tool)(asked at the dentist if they had any old ones) or a jewelers file to pick around questionable solder points .
Then if you find one use a fine point soldering iron and just touch it. Look especially by the larger components and ones that could get hot (small step down transformers, resisters) or vibrate loose. They are mass produced by wave soldering and are prone to be under soldered to save a half a penny in production.I know many a TVs that have been tossed for just a bad/ cracked solder joint. OR option2 just get a different one and hope it doesn't have a problem.

Ed, this seems to be a question here. Some people have been lucky and gotten the instrument cluster to drop right in and all was fine. Others have had to take the vehicle to the dealership to have them reprogram the instrument cluster to make it work. I haven't found a commonality between those that work and those that don't.

I was told by my local dealership that they must be programed, and that if I installed the new one and all they had to do was program it, it would cost an hours labor 135 bucks. However, a good friend of mine that works at a good shop said he can use his programmer at their shop to do it for a lot less. I haven't done it yet since I have more important things taking up my money at the moment.
