Default Strange knocking sound

Hello today I was driving my 02 x-type and when I hit a bump I heard a loud knocking sound. When I break or take off the sound returns n I can feel it as well..as well as when I turn.. So I was do sure it was the strut so I replaced it. Well as soon as I drive it the knock returned.. I'm stumped

I'd check your lower front control arms. Jack the car up and try to move the wheel. If it moves in and out, check your suspension bushings.

X-cited, are you sure that it is coming from the front of the car. our cars are notorious for a knock like you are describing from the back of the car. They normally come from either the upper shock mounts or from the rear sway bar. May want to check out those components and go from there.

Yes I'm sure it is.. I'm having my mechanic look at it now, plus I don't think I mentioned that my steering wheel shakes at high speeds to like on the highway. I'll let u know what the diagnosis is as soon as I find out. Thanks for the reply

X-cited, the shaking of the steering wheel is more than likely from the toe on the front wheels being slightly out. This is especially true if you only start to feel it at about 50 mph and up (getting worse the faster you drive).

As for the knock, I would venture to guess that you are looking at either worn tie rod ends or possibly a bad bushing on the lower A-arm.

How difficult is it to replace a control arm?

Ok I got the car from my mechanic today and they said my right side strut is bad as both of my front control arms are bad.. So 720.00 later I'm getting my car back.. Good thing I love this car otherwise I wouldn't pay that kind of money. Hey one question when I bought the car it was missing the sleeve from the stock cd changer, now do I have to go to jaguar and actually get another sleeve, go get another changer, or are there any options as far as universal sleeves?

I found out that it is my Rear lower control arms.. I've also had some trouble with my mpg lately.. Could the wheel be wobbling to where it puts strain on the car causing it to eat fuel?

X-cited, depending on how bad the wheels are toed in, it can affect the mileage. Granted, you should be seeing some excessive tire wear too. You can do the rear lower control arms yourself. It isn't that hard to do. If you are talking about the small arms in the front, those are 2 bolts and the arm falls out of the car. Very easy to do. If you have to replace the big arm, then that is a little more difficult, but for the most part, it is easy to do to. You just have to support the spindle to make sure you do not hurt the CV joints.
