Strange rear suspension problem.
Has anyone had this problem with the rear of their x-type? Mine is a 2001 3.0 sport with low mileage. Had a rumbling at the rear , following a
previous treads , changed the rear anti-roll bar bushes and drop links. Problem seem to go , now when with either a load or rear passengers , the rear wheel will hit the wheel arch near the bottom by the rear door on the passenger door. Is it an obvious fix or does it sound the rear sub frame bushes are gone ? Help !
Dampers and springs were checked o.k. , have never seen this on any cars i have owned before , very strange !

Check to see if the lower control arm is bent. I accidently lift the rear of my car on it and twisted it so that the wheel is closer to the wheel arch. I used a sledgehammer to bend it back mostly... but I think it's best to replace for $100 and a little time. Should go for an alignment afterwards. Gotta put this on my to-do-list.
I agree with LEB.
I once had a tire shop that was changing my tires for the winter lift the car by putting their lift blocks on the lower rear control arm and bent one of them. They are quite flimsy and only designed to handle a load in one direction....easily bent/twisted.

Believe it or not, you can bend those things quite easily with a hammer, channel locks, or as I used....a hydraulic jack to get them back to shape.
If you soak down the bolts and stuff overnight with liquid wrench before you go about the replacement, then you shouldn't have a hard time. However, yes, 4 wheel alignment would be in order after you're done.

Have not had a chance to check it yet , busy at work. But one thing concerns me , having a look at the part mentioned , cannot see how a vertically hinged arm can cause the wheel to move laterally, especially under load? If it was bent would it not be obvious from the get go. Thought i would see it straight away?
They can twist so to speak.
I can't answer the "how" part, but I can attest from experience that when it was bent, I got a fairly loud knock sound and a rumble that seemed like it was coming from the rear wheel arch area.
