Default Stripped stud splines? How can I fix this?

I went to do the brakes and rotors on the front of my 05 x type and ran into a poor situation on the second tire. While attempting to remove the lug nuts the final lug nut is just spinning around. Even though it requires great force to get it to move, its not backing out. This is leaving me to believe that the splines on the stud are stripped. Is there perhaps a method of removing the lug nut? (Besides taking it to a mechanic). Is there some way to get the stud to stop spinning long enough to remove the lugnut??

harryc - I had the same issue. I ended up cutting the lugnut off with a grinder using a small cutting wheel.

I tried using a pair of vice grips on the backside of the stud, but that didn't hold it.

Hopefully, someone has a trick for you to try.

Try putting a pair of vice grips on the backside of the hub, then drill up the stud. Depending on how far you got the nut loose, it shouldn't take to long to drill.

That sounds like a pretty good idea to drill out the middle of the stud. Once you get it out you can put in a new stud. There are probably some oversized ones to press in. Barring that you might can put in a new standard size stud and tack weld it to the hub on the back side. Not a big weld just a couple of good tacks.
