I just purchased a 2002 X-Type Sport, manual transmission with 171,000 miles. The engine seems exceptional for the mileage, and the car generally runs out good. Today in looking over the car a little better I seen what looks like socks in a plastic back wedged in between the block and the intake manifold. I'm attaching pictures...Could anyone tell me if these are supposed to be in there??

Also, any suggestions on the following problem would be much appreciated...my tachometer and speedometer do not function. The gas gauge and temp gauge work appropriately, and the tach will move, but only to about 1000 when the engine is at what I would guess somewhere around 5000.

Yes, that "bag" is supposed to be there - odd, I know, but correct. The tach and speedometer question though, hmmmm.....I don't think that has ever been mentioned and as those items are completely electronic my only thought is that there are dirty connectors somewhere.
By the way, Jaguar produced a redesigned and much improved, much lighter clutch for these cars which simply transforms the shift quality. This new clutch came available around 2004. If oyou have a clunky 2-3 shift then you still have the original clutch.

 

Thanks for the info. And my gearbox is very "clunky" and stiff. That's another issue to address at some point. While I believe I got a steal @ $1800 for how the car drives and runs, there are a lot of little issues and some interior cosmetic stuff to address at a later date.

 

What is the age and condition of the battery? A failing or weak battery can cause random electrical 'faults' and DTCs to be set. With the ignition in the off position, the battery should have at the very least 12.2 volts across the terminals. If not, the battery must be replaced.

Check all electrical connections for corrosion and check the wiring loom for damage.

 

Change out the transmission fluid and you'll prolly be happier.

 

I'll check the voltage. It is supposed to be a new battery, but it never hurts to check. Thanks for the tip!

 

I'll give it a try. That would be a cheap, easy fix.

 

sov211, can you tell me what are those bags? And what they doing in there under intake manifold? I have owned three X-Type and I never seen any bag under intake manifold. Are you trying to pull Preacher leg?
Preacher-Steve why don't you pull them bags out to see what they are? The thing I concern is in the top picture, I see the line above your finger, it's look like a crack manifold, pardon me if I'm wrong, but if it is the crack line then you have to replace the in take manifold, or have some one can weld it.

 

No, I am not pulling your leg. Those plastic bags under the manifold are on every 2.5 and 3 litre engine (and I assume on the smaller engines too, but as they never came to Canada or the US I have not seen them.). The purpose of the bags, though, I do not know.
And yes, I saw the crack in the manifold too...

 

the bag is also in the s types ! i have one under my supercharger .
its apparently a sound deadener .
id say it also doubles as a heat isolator/insulator.

 

The bag under the intake manifold is for sound deadening. If you remove it, it will cause no negative effects to the car. Just there to make the motor seem quieter.

 

Sound deadening...that was the one thing that occurred to me as a possibility and it makes sense. Thanks! And if the manifold has been removed for any reason (replacing spark plugs, for example), the bag is likely to be discarded as a nuisance, much as the air duct for the transfer case is discarded by oil-change-jockeys (the ones whose principal job is to overtighten and thus strip the sump plug); they see no obvious need for it, so in their lack of wisdom they just toss it.

 

To those that commented about a crack in the manifold...In looking at the pictures it does appear there is a crack. I didn't see it until the comments. Anyway, I went back out and performed a little closer inspection. What appears in the photo as a crack is actually just the angle of the picture where there is an excessive "lip" of metal at that point of the manifold.
