The high level stoplight in the tailgate has been dodgy for a while (with one or two LEDs not working. Now it doesn't light up at all. Is this a common fault?

JagAlan, based on what you are describing, your problem lies in 1 of 2 spots. You either have a bad 3rd brake light (ie, the high mount light) or the ground wire has become disconnected for the 3rd brake light. So, if you can, remove the 3rd brake light and see what the wiring looks like. You will also want to do a detailed inspection of the orange/green wire coming off of the 3rd brake light as that is the power wire that is getting power from your other 2 lower brake lights. If the lower brake lights are not working, then that changes things completely. But, you will also want to look at the black wire coming off of the 3rd brake light to make sure that it is bolted to the body there near the 3rd brake light.

Mine quit working when my battery got weak. I replaced my battery last week, and voila, it works again!
