Default Time to replace Trunk lift supports?

2003 X type Jag AKA -Midnight. I'm wondering if its time to replace the trunk lift supports. When I hit my trunk button on the remote it unlocks the trunk but I have to manually open. In my 2001 S Type Jag when I hit the trunk button on the remote it would unlock and the trunk would come flying open. How does the trunk open on your X-type?

It is supposed to unlatch, but rise only a few inches. The "S" did have a power assist available.

Agree with Wa3ra. The lift struts in the X-Type trunk do not automatically lift the truck lid open. They simply counter-balance the trunk lid weight, making it easier to open manually.

You don't fully appreciate how much assistance these struts provide until they go bad with age and you strain to lift the truck lid with out the strut assist.

Indeed, the trunk lid is surprisingly heavy without the struts.

Regarding automatic opening, there's an ongoing project:
Jaguar X-Type auto boot open

Long story short, it works (video in first post) but there are a few small details the supplier of the mod is looking to take care of now.

Ever since I got my X-Type the boot has always been that way - when you press the remote button the boot pops up about 1cm.. and that's it...

As the button on the remote can be hit by accident as you put your key into the ignition (yes I have found this a few times.. :-)) I sometimes wonder if it is a safety feature as the lid stays down and keeps your items in the boot safe to a degree even if you are moving

If you have the message centre, it will tell you "boot open"; if you ignore it, the car will go into limp mode in a short distance.

Rather a problem if you need to carry something too long or too tall for a few miles! Our cars are definitly not intended to move Ampeg 8 x 10" bass cabinets!

On my Classic it make no odds. The open door warning comes up but I can drive as far as I want :-) but with back seats fixed and can't be moved...

Sent whilst mobile so please excuse any mistakes or misspellings.

1995-xj6 the trunk lid supports are bad. Is it necessary to go through the back seat to remove the forward sockets?
thanks for your help
