Transmission or clutch Problem question
My transmission isn't slipping in normal driving, it shifts quite sharply until it picks up a load on a hill or you try to accelerate in passing another car. Then it just fails to pick up ANY gear. The RPM's go up but there is seemingly no connection to the gear box. If you are just driving normally, starting, stopping, taking off there are no unusual jerks, noises, nothing out of the ordinary in the normal range of shifting through the gears whether in full automatic or hand shifted. It all works perfectly until you try to rapidly accelerate. It doesn't seem to matter if the car is cold or up to full operating temperature, the symptoms are the same. Is this a mechanical problem? computer problem? or what? This transmission doesn't slip it just fails to engage any gear if you try to rapidly accelerate. Under some circumstances this is a bit dangerous. I need to get it fixed but I'd like to know what I'm up against if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks.

MORE ON SAME Problem
I'm sorry, Its a 2002 3.0 X-Type Jag with 90 k miles. It a wonderful machine in absolutely immaculate condition and I enjoy it immensely. I really want to get it fixed but I really do need to get some idea of what I'm getting into. I've read where such repairs can exceed the cash value of the automobile. So, I figure being forewarned is being forearmed and if there are alternatives to a prohibitive repair bill maybe I can pursue them. I just really want to keep this car on the road, but in a safe condition. thanks and sorry for the need to post information that should have been included in the initial post.

Hate to tell you but that sounds like burnt clutches in the trans or torque converter and that means a complete rebuild. Got mine done for $1967 but most quotes around me were running between $2400-$3000.
OOps, you've got a manual trans (guess I should have read it a little more closely.)
That is absolutely the classic indication of worn clutch. It's new clutch and pressure plate time.
