Default Transmission Fluid

I want to change the fluid in my automatic transmission and was thinking of using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, it says it is Idemitsu K17 compliant. My question is has anyone used this in the tranny or what have you used when you changed your transmission fluid?

Thanks.

Mobile 1 synthetic ATF is commonly used in 350 series car transmissions with good results. I can't speek to your cars needs.

Do a search over in the XJ8/XJ6 forum. There is an extensive thread by Stevetech and Strateloss on the subject that may apply to your series car. Do a search in your car's forum as well. No doubt sombody has done the footwork on this before.
Good hunting. Let us know what you discover.

So far besides Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, I have found Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF, Redline D4 AFT, Royal Purple Max ATF, Amsoil Synthetic ATF, and Castrol Multi-Vehicle to meet the Idemitsu K17 or Esso LT71141 specs for the X-type transmission. If anyone has used any of these fluids and had good results (no tranny faults), I would love to hear from you!

Thanks.

Haha, yeah I'm not to sure yet. But if I get it out I'm sure I'll find a way to get some back in. Do a search in the forum, I know there is a procedure to change the fluid correctly, I just don't remember it at the moment. Be forewarned thou, none of the procedures that I found said what fluid they used (hence why I started this thread! ).

Default Atf

Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF meets the specs for X-Types, and is recommended by Castrol for that application. And it is pretty cheap - I got mine for about $3.99 per quart. Some people are using the Mobil 1 synthetic, but it is more expensive.

I changed the fluid in my 2002 X-Type with 30000 miles, and the transmission started working much better than it had previously. The fluid that was in there was brown, and for some reason there were 2 quarts more than there should have been! The easy way to change it is to open the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission pan, and let it drain until it stops. If the right amount of fluid is in the transmission to start with, only 3 quarts will come out. In any case, you then put the plug back in and add 3 quarts. Run it for a day or two, then repeat. Keep doing this until the fluid that comes out looks clean and red, which could be 3-4 times. The hard part of all this is adding the fluid. You can reach the filler pipe from under the car, but you will need to rig up some kind of tube to put the fluid in. Don't bother with the method that the shop manual describes for checking the fluid level. I did it, but it is messy and dangerous, as you have to work under the car with the engine running. Just drain out what comes out, and add 3 quarts.
