Default Transmission Fluid- "To Change or not to change, that is the question"

I have been scouring the forum about changing the transmission fluid in an X-Type. I have came across numerous great posts on the subject. I am contemplating doing the fluid change, but have been told by a couple of different people that I shouldn't even bother, that it may make things worse. Currently the only thing I am noticing with the transmission is the shifting- It shifts very quickly from 1st to 2nd and then 3rd. I have no idea when the fluid was last changed as the previous owner did not know- I purchased her at 171,000 miles. She has 201,000 miles on her now. Any opinions on this? Thanks in advance.

Tim

Silver Panthera, I would say to change it. Yes, there are some horror stories out there about "changed the fluid and the tranny failed shortly there after". But, are you sure that it will fail tomorrow? I think it is coincidence. New fluid is almost always going to cause things to run better and cooler (heat is the killer of transmissions). Do the fluid change and call it good.

Thermo, Thanks for the response. You confirmed what my gut has been saying. The guys I had talked to stated that there may be metal in all the nooks and crannies of the transmission and that I shouldn't "disrupt" them.

there actually may also be gold in there....so i would rather look for gold than not look for metal.
100K+ miles....absolutley change it.
you'll likely be very happy with the result.

that nooks n crannies ideology has never been a good reason to not change oil.

Default Transmission fluid should be changed

This advice isn't specific to Jaguar but to all cars. Fluids eventually gets contaminated and start wearing the components. Various additives in the fluid also breaks down with heat. The fluid usually starts out as a nice red color and darken as it gets contaminated. The manual usually have section on how often to change the fluid. If the manual claims that the fluid is for the life of the car, don't believe it. The fluid isn't in a close system. It will be contaminated at some point.

As to things getting worse after you change the fluid, that happens if you never change your fluid and damaged the transmission. Let's say you never change your fluid for 200K and then noticing issue with your transmission decides to change the fluid. The reduce friction from the fluid change actually makes the shifting issue worse, but this is because your transmission is toast any way.

My observation of changing valve body seals is the same as it would be for poking a snake with a stick!

My mechanic said if there isn't a leak then it's not something you need to do. I don't know though but if my diff dies on me I will use it as an excuse to get an LSD.
