trunk/boot lifts? 2003 X-type
So there are two little gizmos on either side of the trunk lid support armatures.
They are little cylinders that appear to "push" the trunk open just a pinch when you press the button or remote.
Both of these doo-hickies are broken on my car and I found/saved one of them.
I have pictures of them and the piece that's still on the armature where it broke., but I don't know how to upload a picture to this forum.
Anyone have any idea what this part is and how I'd order new ones? Can they be bought online as opposed to going to the dealer? I would hope they're not terribly expensive as they seem to be just plastic around a strong spring apparatus.
The piece I have is from the driver's side and does indicate L1 on the piece. The passenger side, I assume would be R1, but this must have been gone when I purchased the car.
Any help?
Thanks!

auto-lift
I don't believe the trunk is supposed to auto lift on the X. It's kind of weighted from what I can tell and these little doo-dads are suppose to just lift the trunk a few inches so that when you hit the button, it kind of raises enough so you can lift it the rest of the way.
Would be very sweet though if it did raise the trunk, but my guess is that it's not intended for this.

I had a 2003 X Type, and, these little trunk lift assists both broke on my car while it was under warranty. The replacements that the dealer put on were much beefier than the old ones. Still didn't do much, except, pop the trunk lid open slightly.

Poppers
I called the Jag Dealer in Tampa. These things are only $13.50 each. I cannot find them online and I read that the stock pieces break quite a bit and that the replacements are much stronger. (might have seen that in this very thread)
So to be clear, they do NOT lift the trunk all the way up. They merely pop it so it becomes slightly ajar. But now that my second one has broken, I can really see the significance of having the trunk ajar if you approach the car and your hands are full.
For $27 plus tax you can get a set from the dealer. Unless someone on here finds better/less expensive ones. If so, please post! Thanks.

In the S-Type (and most other cars with the feature) the trunk lid opens because it is weighted so. This often means the mechanism takes some space in the boot itself, in some cars the weighted arms may actually break stuff in the boot when you close the lid. The X-Type lid is just hinged, and the gas struts are optimized with the exact amount of strength to hold the lid in place at almost any open position.
I wanted an auto-opening trunk lid, and as a test tried a set of stronger gas struts. The result was that the lid indeed opened all the way when I pressed the button, but fairly slowly. I then realized it now took two hands and a lot of effort to close the lid, so I put the old struts back...
