Default Type of glue or tape

Hi, do not know the exact name of it but the strip on front passenger side falls off. I used 3M double sided tape (it is intended for office use) and it did not work when it rained. This morning the strip completely came off after rain whole night. So what glue or tape should I apply to fix this problem? Thanks,

Ran

3M makes a trim adhesive that should do the trick. I have seen it at auto parts stores.

Thanks! Got 3M super strength molding tape from advanced auto parts and seems it works well now and will see whether it can resist water.

yeeran, it will hold up. I have used that stuff on various vehicles and never had a problem. If anything, it sticks too well.

I second this, will absolutely stand up to heavy rains at speed.

Prior to applying 3M , make sure the surface is clean and no dirt is sitting there .Adhesive promoters are a good idea for such stuffs

That 3M VHB adhesive (Very High Bond) comes in different thicknesses and types. Can be the adhesive only or laminated to a closed cell foam. VERY good stuff for automotive trim pieces. Like another poster said, you need to make sure the surface is clean. At a minimum you need to thorougly wipe off the surface with alcohol to remove any polish or wax or anything else on the surface. The adhesion promoter wiped on after gives an additional incrimental bond, but isn't absolutely necessary. Not sure what the magic ingedient is in that stuff, but it smells like plain old alcohol to me. I sell membrane keypads and we use that adhesive in a lot of harsh or outdoor type of applications to seal out moisture. Once properly applied nothing gets through and it will stick forever.

The 3M auto trim tape is the right stuff ... but, this is how a pro does it:

1. clean off traces of the old tape by parking the car with the door towards the sun, spray with WD40, scrape and roll it off using a plastic scraper, credit card, thumbnail. The WD40 keeps the residue from sticking back to the card as you make progress.

2. clean off panel with naptha on a rag .. twice

3. run a piece of masking tape from the adjacent panels as a guide line at the top of the trim line

4. put two rows of tape on the trim piece, leaving the backing in place

5. trial fit to see how much of a gap you will need to leave at each end

6. pull about 6 inches of backing paper away from the end closest to the door

7. tack the trim down at the exposed end using the adhesive

7. eyeball where you want to go with the rest of the piece

8. pull about 3/4 of the remaining backing away

9. lay the trim down while manipulating the position from the end near the fender

10. finish by pulling remainiing backing away and laying the remaining trim down.

11. if you are satisfied with the result, press the trim down by running a rag down the length of the trim, pushing as hard as you can with both hands. Let the finished product bake in the sun for a day. Do not wash for a month.

Try to lay it in one go and avoid micro managing the placement to avoid the finished result from looking like the Atlantic Ocean. Of course, the factory trim may be a lot stiffer than the old aftermarket stuff and be easier to manipulate.

Should take about 15 minutes tops

edit: whoops, you already have it on the car
