Default Unusual Engine Hesitation and startup

2003 Jag X-type 2.5. Car will not stay started on first try. Will start on second. When I accelerate most times under strain it jumps and sputters until I left off the gas. Check engine light on and code reads P1111. Have had slight problem in past but only on cold winter days and them sporadic.
Any thoughts anyone.

rnmcclain, try this, get in your car first thing in the morning, put the key in the ignition and turn the key to the RUN position and let it set there for a few seconds (5 is plenty), then attempt to start the car. Did it start much easier than normal. If so, your fuel pump is on its way out. Granted, when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? That could be causing what you are seeing too. Probably not a bad idea to check the fuel rail pressure (should be 30-40 psig with the motor running at idle with it closer to 40 or if the engine is off, in the 40-50 psig range with it hovering closer to 50 psig). Low in the band pressure is a sign that the fuel pump is either running into a blockage or the pump is getting weak.

Thermo, I tried what you suggested and it did start up. I have not replaced the fuel filter since I have had it the last two years. Ill try that and see if it helps. Can you tell me where they are on the 2003 Jag X-type 2.5.

rnmcclain, jack the right rear tire off of the ground. Slide under the car at the right rear passenger door. Look straight up. You should see a silver can with a line coming in at each end (1 end points at the rear diff, the other end points at the right rear door). Just a note though, you may need the fuel filter removal tool to get the fittings off of the fuel filter. Some cars have 2 tabs that you can depress, others have a spring clip that holds the fuel lines in place.

Ray, yes, that is a module that controls the fuel pump. I guess I have to ask why you are replacing that module. As a general rule, the pump is what fails, not that module. If you are having a hard start issue, then I would be checking to make sure that the pump is performing like it should. This seems to be a growing issue with our cars as they age.

Thermo
It is the actual pump I do need to replace I reckon. Do you know the part number or exact discription of the part - just asking for a fuel pump on search seems to bring the module I quoted up.
regards
Ray

just a continuation on this part. I am offered - petrol power steering pumps - abs pumps - tank feed pumps - so many pumps ! Basically what are we talking about here, is there a main fuel pump for the engine (must be) how do I address my search for such a beast ?
Thanks in advance

Ray, what you are after is a "fuel pump". The power steering pumps, tank feed pumps, etc are not what you are after. Doing a little bit of looking, we need to see what your VIN number is (atleast the last 7 digits. It seems that there were some minor changes made to the fuel pumps and a lot of what I am finding only apply to VIN's between C34293 and D32202. This may help narrow down the options you have to look at.

Granted, you may want to look at: Jaguar x Type Fuel Pump 2002 2007 OE New with Filter Free Expedited Shipping | eBay. This is just the fuel pump itself, not a complete assembly. In this case, you can remove the pump assembly and replace only the mechanical fuel pump and possibly save yourself some money. Granted, if your problem with the fuel pump is inside the rest of the pump assembly, then you are simply doing a lot of work for not. But, based on what you are describing, it is a pump issue, not an assembly issue. The only thing that I am not finding out is whether the 2.1L motor uses the same fuel pump assembly as the 2.5L and 3.0L motor. All the listings I see only talk about the 2.5L and 3.0L motors. They should be the same, but I can not confirm that.

Thanks Thermo
I have now removed the lambda sensor your accurately pinpointed. I had difficulty getting my size 100 hands into the right position initially - after much stripping down of bits and pieces (including battery removal) all went well. The car is now starting good.
By removing the battery I lost my radio (I knew it you say) However I remember that there is a factory reset combination of keys and have mislaid my info. Do you know it ?
Something like mode, cross arrow and mempty key in a certain sequence. This restores the radio function without the access code of which I have two that came with my radio manual - neither works.
regards
Ray

Ray, unfortunately, I do not have that info at my fingertips. Hopefully you have a local dealership near you that you can simply stop by the service department and they can look up the number for you.

Ray
This was suggested by others:

Enter any code 3 times so that the display shows "PLEASE WAIT"

Simultaneously press ">>" "PTY" "A.MEM" should only take 2 or 3 seconds and the radio turns on.

radio code bypass code

Hope this works for you.
