Smile Vibration at speed with my '05 3.0 VDP

Hi,
I just bought this X-Type and it has a growling vibration starting at 70 and getting louder at 90 and above. There's no shake in the steering wheel and the car is smooth as silk (87,000 miles) at all lower speeds. Sight unseen the Jaguar service guy in Mahwah NJ told me [over the phone] I would most likely have to replace the propeller shaft. Could it just be the center carrier bearing? Or am I just going to have to get the shaft? (So to speak.)

Dellavar, first off, welcome to the Forums. Lots of good information here and lots of people willing to assist. But, we do ask a small favor in that you stop by the New Member Section and give us a small introduction (look at the other posts to see what they have done). We pride ourselves in being a better car group and this is our way of doing it. Also, this will give you a chance to meet those that make this place move.

As for the car, I would say to pick it up and then give the carrier bearing a greasing. We have found that on this car, if the bearing gets dry, it will hum like you are talking about and a simple greasing is all that it needs to quiet down and be good for many, many years to come. Mine was doing this 5 years ago. A little bit of termaline grease injected into the bearing via a needle attachment on a grease gun and all has been good since.

If you do end up having to replace the carrier bearing, yes, you can replace just the bearing, but if you are having a shop do it, the price difference is minimal with the extra labor for getting the bearing off that getting a new shaft assembly may not be a bad idea. Get a price quote for doing things either way and see which way costs less and if it may be worthwhile to spend the little extra on doing it the other way if you are getting a lot more for the money.

Thanks a million, Thermo, you are very generous with your time and I appreciate it. I will get on over to the New Member Section as you suggest.

Hey dellavar,
Welcome to the forums. If after you grease the bearing and it still does not fix your issue, I sell all kinds of parts for the x types. I have an extra driveshaft with bearing I can sell you cheap. Also If you wanted to make a 2 hour ride south, I would be happy to swap it out for a lot less then any shop would do it for. Call it the forums Dr! Discount price. HAHA. Pm me if your interested and we will go from there.

Good Luck,
The DR!
