Default When your Jag overheats in traffic!

My cars engine overheated this am. Need to replace thermostat and electric fan unit the dealer says. Cost R 8800! Is this really the cost of these parts? I have a Jag xtype 2005 model

Welcome to the forum Dent3,

I've moved your question about the Thermostat and Fan to the X-Type section.

You'll get opinions and advice on the estimated cost here from members with the same model. (conversion rate today gives SA Rand 8800 = $980 = £628)

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

Thermostat about £25 here and about an hour labour.
So about £550 for fan unit

I think it would be unusual for both the fans and the thermostat to fail at the same time.

Why not start by checking the fuses for the fans - F16, 5A in the Engine Compartment Fuse Box and F40, 80A, fitted to the underside of the same fuse box - more difficult to check, but use a meter to see if there's power at the fans when they ought to be running.

Then change the thermostat to see if that's the cause.

Then look for a used/second hand fan unit if that's what's needed.
