Default Whistling/Screaming "Banshee" Sound @ > 70 MPH

Howdy, all.

I just picked up my "new" 2007 X-Type and drove it 250 miles back from the dealer in Tampa to my home in Jacksonville, FL. Much of the travel was on highways, with speed limits exceeding 70 MPH.

More often than not, every time we drove the car (25,250 miles on the odometer) over 70 MPH, we'd hear an extremely loud whistle that seemed to come from around the side view mirrors area that, at times, sounded like a loud, wailing banshee. Cracking both of our front windows would reduce this whistling noise, but not stop it altogether.

I recall having had a similar problem with my 2004 X-Type 3.0, but don't remember what resolved or fixed it. It does seem that by now, Jaguar or Jag enthusiasts would have figured out how to minimize this awful racket.

Any suggestions?

Much obliged!

Could be door seal, trim along edges of the windshield, or maybe the front edge of the aftermarket cloth roof is creating noise?

I have no noises to speak of at 70, 80, or higher; except for normal low tire/road noise.

Thanks, Gold.

I know this >70 noise is coming from the side view mirrors on both sides. We took the scientific approach: process of elimination! :-)

You sound sure it is the mirrors and not a prop shaft whine so I won't go there....on my X the molding along the bottom of the front door windows would often come loose - maybe check those bits, particularly along the front near the mirror since that seems to be the source of your noise. The trim can simply get lifted off.

The first time I heard that noise on my '07 X-Type, the dealer replaced the two windshield reveal moldings (on the sides of the windshield). Then, when I hear it again later, they replaced the differential. Not sure which would be the real fix, but I haven't heard it since.

Good luck!

Thanks, all.

Going to check out each of your possible "diagnoses" and see if we can make the monster go away.

Truly appreciate your input!

Oddly enough this very same type of noise happend to me out of the blue yesterday. All I did was lower the window a little and wipe off the top edges of it, wipe the rubber on teh outside of the door where the top of the window fits into and wiped into the channels where the edges of the window fit into. That stopped it completely. Was teh weirdest thing as I have never hd that issue before and it just started like someone turned on a switch. It was really loud and really annoying. It didn't seem like there was a lot of crud that I wiped off, but apparently just enough that something wasn't allowing the window to seal properly. Hope that is all it is for you.

The seals need to be able to "settle" when the glass moves in order to get a good seal. The standard fix for wind whistle was to lubricate all seals using silicone spray and buffing. You may prefer some other lubricant. Even talcum powder will work.
