I bought my X in 2009 for the same price as I would have paid for a Honda or the like. Everyone at work and friends etc, warned me on buying some cool looking JAG. They were certain it would be a lemon! Especially when I said it was AWD.

These people just didn't want me to get screwed over. They sent me CL links to much more "sensible cars" etc. Well, I bought the JAG X and I have never looked back. The engine is a tried and true work horse (6700 rpm redline). I added cool air-intake tube with a K&N air filter and Magnaflow mufflers to push more air thru the system. I like the performance. The X Type is cool because you can do some different mods if you're so inclined, and this car looks like nothing else! My X is lowered and well kept. As long as you flush all the gear box fluids, and do a spark plug change, you should have a nice JAG that is dependable.

 

And an Audi is just a dressed up VW, a Lexus a prettified Toyota, an Infinity a Nissan in fancy dress, it goes on and on...

Good question.

Had my 02 2.5V6 Sport more than a few years ago now and she was a gorgeous car, compliments everywhere we went......fairly heavy on fuel but its a V6 and only to be expected.
The AWD was just awesome!!

My son now has a 56 plate 2.0d Sport in Black and guess what......compliments everywhere on her, she's gorgeous with classic lines....The Piano black interior makes it a little more modern too, all good

No issues, no problems, plenty of power & good economy......everyone asking how can you afford a Jag??....lol

The very few Ford comments or "old mans car" have came from younger guys running around in 1.2 10 year old Clios???

That's why I never let it bother me. True "Car Guys" know the cardinal rule of never dissing someone's ride to their face unless you're looking for a fight or a race. Everything else is just meant to get a rise out of you and their comment already proved they're a douche rocket, so it couldn't matter less what they think.

 

My first Jag was a 1985 XJ which I bought when it was ten years old and kept for14 years.

I now have two X types (2002 and 2004 2.5's with manual transmissions, and both over 100k on the clock).

They are definitely Jags. They are fine cars. They are superb in the Minnesota winter.

The 2002 has a softer ride than the 2004 and is less tight all round. It is, however, the fancier one with the bigger wheels and sunshine roof.

Great value as used cars; I am not sure they were such a deal new (but that's moot because I couldn't come close to affording one).

 

Not previously a Ford fan, I am now. Ford invested heavily in Jaguar and brought pride and cooperation to Halewood. Ford brought Jaguar electronics into the 21st century. Ford also improved engine and chassis wiring and grounds!
And thanks to all the negative press, I can enjoy great styling, amazing technology and the Jaguar cachet at a budget price!

Heh, some guy said in the UK forum that he's a massive Ford fan, which is why he bought an X-Type, and seemed slightly disappointed upon hearing it's only got like 19% parts and reading through this excellent article:

My fellow maligned brethren,
The S-Type also suffers from Taurusitis and Former-Ford Syndrome. When I was a younger man I would look adoringly at Jags and always think to myself, "Yeah, but who's going to fix it?, You?" Now I realize they are just cars underneath it all and have to be treated as such. Maintenance will always be the key to trouble free driving, whatever the marque.

That said, I have driven many Fords and let me tell you, these are no Fords! Fit, finish, materials, ride, handling, etc. are way above even the most lavishly appointed Taurus.

 

The X type brought a little luxury to the mundane boring Mondeo and Vectra world, personally it makes no difference to me what other folk think of my cars, I buy them because I like them. The X type and the S type brought a wonderful retro feel to Jaguar........just my opinion.

Yes, exactly. I had a 98 SVT Contour and loved that car, but it is not on the same level as my X. The interior on the Contour was nice, I mean it had leather seats and stuff but it still felt and looked like a cheap Ford, nothing wrong with that, it was still a great car, but not a Jag or even close. The X looks and feels like a Jag. The only thing in the interior that reminds me of a ford are some of the switches and frankly, that's a plus. Even though it had the "same" 2.5 duratec V6 the one in the Jag feels better, both are 5 speeds but having the awd over the fwd makes a HUGE difference in how the car feels and drives. I know the suspensions aren't the same, but still. I've also had a 06 Saleen mustang, a 92 4.0 ranger and a 94 2.3 ranger in addition to the svt contour so I've had a few Fords. I am a Ford guy, but I'm also a Jag guy, and I WILL own a 2nd Jag...more if I have it my way haha.

Mmm, in Northern Europe as in the US, Ford are considered to be common rather than cheap and because X Types are so cheap they are also pretty common.
Now I have never owned an X Type, but a good friend of my has and basically as long as you can live with the good natured jibes, poor mans Jag, Jaguar Mondeo etc, I believe that they are both liked and respected cars.
Just to put this into perspective, I am frequently accused of driving an old mans car (X350 XJ), but hey ho, unless it happens to be an Italian supercar, whatever you drive will attract remarks, both negative and positive..

 

Bought my ebony beauty in 2004 and have never looked back. Until the boys graduate college and I can afford an F-Type Coupe then the X-Type is the one for me. Keep on posting fellow enthusiasts. Greetings from Florida.
