Will an '05 transmission fit my car?
I have an '02 X-Type Sport, 3.0L, with auto trans that has lost reverse. The new trans and install is looking like $4800.00. So, I start looking at used boxes and find one with 27K on it for a grand that came from an '05, 3.0L auto. Will it fit and is it worth the risk? $2200.00 vs $4800.00. I think I'll have him do the oil pan gasket while he is in there....any other suggestions? Also, the car has 102K miles, but doesn't seem to have another problems.

The only thing that could be the problem is that the transfer cases were switches from and old style in 02-03 to a new style in 04+. I would expect that all the transmissions will fit because all transfer cases fit, and all engines fit. If you catch my deductive reasoning, there is no reason it shouldn't fit unless they have changed the TCM connectors or something.
Well, I get the trans from the 05 for $800.00. It fit perfectly, the the old transfer case worked with it, it programmed perfectly, and for an extra $400 the shop installed a new oil pan and gasket. With labor, parts, and fluids, I'm back on the road for $2200. So, the answer to the question is yes, the newer trans will fit an 02 as long as it is past VIN C79329. The trans for a car before C79329 seem to be a little harder to find, so I got lucky.
