Default Wing Mirrors

Are my wing mirrors supposed to be non folding? I do not mean power folding btw, it seems I am not fitted for that option. I just cannot fold them manually either, just wanted to find out the score from other X Type owners before getting out the WD40 and giving them a damn good welly probably breaking them of

Being really helpful here, I don't actually know the answer to your question

However, i had the same question with my 2004 X and came to the conclusion a while back after fiddling with as much strength as i dared that the mirror housing is fixed...... but it may not be.

It isn't much of an issue here where parking and road geometry standards seem to be based around a ford f450 rather than a 1959 mini as they appear to be in the uk!

quick update - from googling around I find that they should fold but it is fairly common for the mechanism to corrode and lock up. It seems to be around 50/50 success rate using wd40/force to "unsieze" them versus busting the whole thing apart.

I really dislike having anything that isn't working the way it is supposed to (and thanks for reminding me about my mirrors btw because I had forgotten about them!!!) but on this one, I plan to continue to leave alone.

Successful Googling, Danny.

The standard (not Power Fold) mirrors are designed to fold back on impact:

This is to avoid breakage and is NOT intended for use in regular parking.

Thanks, Graham! I have wondered the same.

Default My Five Dollar's Worth

I did read a post in this Forum where someone attempted to fold-in the mirrors on their Jaguar X-Type and they broke. So, I don't know if it is a particular year when they installed the folding mirrors. I would just use caution when attempting to manually fold. If the mirrors cannot be folded manually, then it would take an awfully strong impact to make then fold - to prevent damage!

unclip mirror covers from underneath, then lube bracket with wd40, then carefully work mirrors in and out, this worked for me. Good Luck

Your mirror swivels are likely just corroded.

Firmly grasp your mirror housing at the far end with one hand and nearest the car with the other. Push the far end toward the car while supporting the end closest to the car. The end closest to the car will "lift" slightly as the mirror swings toward the car. I had to use more effort than I thought I would need before the mirror moved. Lubrication would be helpful as stated above.
