Default X-Type 2.0D common fault clutch+flywheel

Hi!
I was browsing adds about X-Types for sale. Found one add, where was yearmodel 2004, 2.0 diesel for sale, driven 144000km. In text was reading "Just serviced, changed the clutch and flywheel (common fault)".

In our, just perfectly working, 2004 2.0 diesel X-Type has now about 130000km on clock, and when I was reading that info, it just crossed in my mind that when that fault is going to be in our Jag if it is common fault...

What I am worrying, is how does that common fault appear? What happens when that clutch + flywheel common fault comes around? How can I notice it during normal driving? What are the symptoms?

Thanks for answers

hi,
Can't say i noticed such draconian symtoms with my 2.0 x type, (119000m), but moving off in 1st can cause a slight rattle from, i believe, transmission. ( can emphasize this if i engage 4th. and slowly release clutch!) does anyone recognize similar symptom? In all other respects, magnificent!
Regards to all.

Hello all I'm new to this forum but I think I can help with your trouble,
After using my x type as a taxi for many years there is a few tell tell signs of DM fly wheel ware.
1 your starting motor will fail due to the metal of the fly wheel going into the motor, fixing or replacing this will only last you about 3 months before it happens again.
2 slowly press your clutch in, if it vibrates you fly wheel is on the way out.
Now there is a fix from this DM fly wheel but trust me it's c##p,fitting a solid or DM conversion sounds good on the pocket but the ride after is horrid, imagine being sat on a bus waiting at traffic lights that vibration you get may put a smile on your face but in a jag it's not good.
Hope this helps anyone out there.
P.s Jag best taxi ever

Hi taxi dan

viewed an x type 2.0D this wk
was aware of clutch issues with this model

car was immaculate 120k fsh with jag
however there was a slight noise from the lower belt side of the engine bay at tick over
the noise was not really noticable from inside the car
and seemed to go once 1,500/2000 rpm was reached
also when clutch pedel was depressed ?

would this point to a clutch related problem
or any other problem ?

many thanks

To be honest I couldn't give you a real answer but I do know that when mine was on the way out there was a noise like a tapping coming from the bell housing started just a little noise and like yourself couldn't hear it from inside the car,but after a week sounded like a lump hammer smacking the engine.

I've just bought another 2.2TDi and it had its dual mass flywheel changed at 70K miles (112K Km).

There doesn't seem to be any time scale on them failing.

You can buy standard flywheels that wont subsequently fail.

2.0D UK Jag X-Type Sport 5sp

I had a DMF fail and had it replaced with a solid conversion and did not notice any difference smooth and no slipping. About a month later it started slipping and a rattling noise appeared.

The noise is present when the clutch is NOT depressed (push down not upset and sad) when the clutch IS depressed it goes. It also goes when I touch the accelerator to about 1500rpm.

I went to a Jag specialist and they said the release bearing was buggered, I called the AA the diagnosed as a release bearing, I took it to a garage and they’re saying the gearbox is shot and empty of oil.

Now I have driven a lot of cars and this is the best feeling gearbox I have ever used, I drove it hard the day before I took it to the Jag man and the AA and it was beautiful (apart from the slipping).

What do you folks think?
