x type gearbox proplems
Hi
I am new to this forum and I would like some help
I have a 2002 xtype 2.0 se auto with 56k miles and it has a strange gearbox fault I will try and explain
1) The car has to warmed up before I can drive away otherwise it will not change gear it gets stuck in 2nd when it is warm it will change gear until I have to break for a juction then it will over rev and slip out of gear i have to turn the car off and lock her up then when I restart the car will drive lovely
2) picture this the car is warm and driving lovely but all the warning lights are on when all the lights are off it will slip out of gear
I have been told that I need a new gearbox but I think that it will not solve the problem
I have replaced the Gear Range Sensor but this did not work
I have had the car checked over and it came back with 2 faults
P7032 7033 these are incorrect gear ratio's
I have a list of (PCMPTEC) sensor this seems to be the main sensor for the engine and gearbox does any body know where this is located on the car and if this has happened to any of you guys what is the cure

This sounds like there is not enough fluid in the Transmission. In the automatic there is a temp sensor that will open solenoids to the transmission cooler once a certain temp is reached. 85 to 100 degrees. This allows the fluid held in the cooler to enter the various chambers. This would explain why it works only after it gets warm. When you brake the fluid could move toward the front and starve the pump or another component inside. Has the fluid level been checked?
The "drivetrain" is critical to several sensors on the x. It know what should be happening but sensors tell a different story. I'm not surprised that you get a Christmas tree effect. The transmission is speaking to you and wants your attention. Check the fluid level

Hi Thank you for your reply
I have had the oil in the gearbox changed about a month ago
the old oil was black and thick could this have blocked the oil cooler or some other part I was thinking of changing the oil again to see if made any difference
The other thing is because I have changed the gearbox speed sensor should I get the computer cleared of any faults ?

How was the drain and fill done?? What fluid was put back in? Very inportant the fluid meets or exceeds the spec for jaguar. The "fill pipe" is under the battery box. So I could only assume that the battery was removed and the codes would have been lost. The answer to your question is YES you need to clear ALL codes after the work has been done.
There are several threads on the correct fluid to replace in your tranny. There are also some very EXTREME ways to drain and refill.
Has the fluid level been checked? JTIS requires the fluid temp be between 85 and 100 degrees. Small amout SHOULD weep from the Check Level hole.

funny thing is that the radio was still working when the car was returned ?
spoke with the mechanic that done the job he told me that he did not have to remove the battery . I have investigated further I have taken the battery off and I have seen a brownish color cap and a black cap on the top of the gearbox what one fills the box I have the owners manual with no luck

One is the "vent" and the other is the fill tube. The fill tube has the LARGE rubber cap. I beleive I rember seeing it in the top edge Middle of pan. My radio does not "reset" when battery is removed so don't let that fool you.
The "check" hole is on the bottom of the Transmission near the shift lever area (weird, I know). You will need to do a best guess as to the temp, unless you get a laser thermo meter to check temp. Can be purchased from local auto parts store. Once the transmission is up to temp ,85 - 100 degrees, you remove the cap and fluid should weep out, not gush and not totally dry. If it does not add small amounts until it does.
Use the "check" procedures found in various threads on this site including the FAQ section.
So WHAT FLUID was it refilled with?
