Default X Type on life support

My baby is about to throw a rod. The knocking sound is horrible. I don't want to give her up. Can these blocks be rebuilt or should I look into a used engine block to replace it? I am in the Dallas, TX area so if there are any recommended shops please send me their info. I will be commuting in the XF until baby jag gets fixed. Not telling the wife...she has been after me to get rid of my first Jag since we got married. Oh the fun times I've had in that car !!!

You can rebuild the engine but it depends on just what you want to spend. If you do a search you can find re-manufactured long blocks in the neighborhood of $3,500.00. Rebuilding it yourself would save a few bucks but you are going to spend some money for machine work. If you do it yourself you are probably still looking at around $2,500.00
Used engines are looking at around $1,000.00 but come with around a 150,000 miles on them.
If you are paying to have the work done removing and changing engines rebuilt or used want be much difference. The long block installation will cost more because all of the accessories have to come off your engine and be installed.
It is really a decision of budget and how much you really enjoy the car.

It looks like you are getting a shop to do it, but if you can do the work yourself it would save a ton of money. Look for an X-Type of the same year with body damage but runs well. Buy it for <$1000, use the motor, part off what you can, then scrap the rest. You'll end up with more work, but less cost. Mine was originally bought for $600, then I bought it for $500 running great. It had a puncture in the oil filter and the guy thought it was a gasket leak from the engine.

Found a shop that will do a rebuild for $2800. I would love to do it myself but I don't have the knowledge or the garage space.

That's a good price. Do it soon before it spits a rod and destroys your block.

Cherry, just curious, you have any idea what might have caused that situation with the rod? Generally these engines are pretty much bullet proof and you don't hear of many instances of that sort of thing happening.

I noticed a slight noise a while back. Took it in and they said it was normal engine noise. Then one day I was coming back home with breakfast and the noise got LOUD. something came loose for sure. I drove it pretty hard and have had ALOT of fun in this car so I am not surprised nor do I blame the duratec block for any weakness. With the way I pushed the car, if anything I expected the transfer case to blow way before the engine.
