X-type with no Transfer Case

X-type with no Transfer Case
Could this be true.
I took my car to a shop in Seattle (crown hill aka british automotives) to change up a few fluids & some maintenance in the car. After they took the car up, the mechanic said I don't have a transfer case & hence no fluid to change. So he quoted me a transmission fluid flush for $275. He said the transfer case is within the transmission & all I need is a transmission fluid flush.
I always read all this buzz about transfer case but can my Xtype be without a transfer case.
BTW I have a 2002 3.0 Sport Automatic.

That is a negative ghost rider!! If you indeed have an X-Type....its AWD and def has a transfer case and NO it is not IN the trans. lol. You can do 1 of 2 things....
1. go back and punch him in the nose.
2. go back and just tell him he is a complete fool and should look into workin at Wal-Mart.
Sorry you got duped ;(

And here is the post of how to ACTUALLY drain and fill your transfer case...i do not know your mechanical level but you can use it to refer to at least.

Honestly I can see his not knowing BUT any mechanic worth is weight in lead would go to all data and look it up. Most awd cars don't have a transfer case that takes its own fluid but if you asked for it to be changed he should have looked it up.
If I were you I'd be looking for a new shop.

OK I hear ya all. I have doubts myself. Yes I'm not mechanically inclined but do know a few things about cars. The problem is I took the car to Firestone to get coolant flushed & ask if they can change the fluid on the transfer case & they came back with the same answer. No transfer case, so no fluid to change.
So I'm taking it to another shop next week to get a quote on the transmission fluid flush. I will ask the same question. If he said none I will take pictures of the underside & post it.

But where was Jimmy Morrison?
Seriously, I would be re-evaluating my choices in shops. Unless I personally know the mechanic at Firestone, I wouldn't even let my car go there after normal business hours to do an wiper blade change in a monsoon. That goes for any chain out there.

AND I JUST ESIMATED A CAR THAT SHE HAD BEEN TAKING IT TO A SHELL GAS STATION FOR WORK
THEY FIXED A OIL LEAK AND THEN THE CAR STARTED TO RUN POORLY. SHE FELT THEY DID SOMETHING AND WAS SUING SO I HAD TO DETERMINE THE FAULT. ALL THEY WERE GUILTY OF WAS NOT SELLING UPPER CHAIN TENSIONER WHEN THEY REPLACED THE CAM COVER GASKETS SINCE THEY WERE OLD STLYE PLASTIC. THEY DONT WORK ON JAGS ALL DAY SO THEY DONT KNOW. THEN A SLIPPER CAM OFF. MUNCHED BY THE CHAIN AND STRECHED. NOW ITS OUTTA TIME AND NEED UPPER TENSIONER CHAINS, LOWER AND PLASTIC CLEANED OUT OF THE PAN. NOTHING THEY DID BUT WHY PEOPLE INSIST ON A GAS STATION OF ALL PLACES. I MEEN YEAH DECADES AGO THEY USED TO BE A GREAT CHOICE WITH VERY KNOWLEDGABLE MECHANICS. IM TALKING 3-4 DECADES, NOW I WOULDNT GET AN OIL CHANGE ON TODAYS CARS. MUCH LESS A LUXURY CAR

The problem in the seattle tacoma area, not a lot of choices. I tried dealers in Bellevue, Tacoma. The Crown Hill have 4 bays full of Jags (XJ, S Types) & recommended by a friend. Went to firestone because a friend work there (plus its only a coolant flush) how hard could that be. I even saw in a thread somebody going to AAMCO for TC flush. Went to check one before & scare the hell out of my pants. Tried out Auburn Foreign Cars & they have one mechanic dedicated for Jag owners. They did my crank shaft leak & belt. Customer Service's not bad.
The dealers wouldn't recommend replacing the fluids & if you insist they charge you $700 plus for the transmission fluid flush - WTF. That's my wife's Jeep 30K maintenance already @ a dealer.
Seriously, unless you live here in the Seattle Area & have a recommendation. I'm all ears...Don't want to monkey around with the car, just want a decent mechanic to do that for me.

My experience with this is that the mechanics look at the data on line and it says "NA" for the type of fluid for the transfer case. This makes them determine that there is none.
Well, I know better, and thank them for their time, and go away. I have also talked to transmission specialists that say they can change the tranny fluid, no problem. Well, they cant. So I thank them and I go away.
My conversations with the factory service guys on the transmission fluid change is that they have never had a failure because of fluid. They have the module failure on the -02 models, but other than that, not many problems. He also indicated that he could take the trans out and hold it on it's end to drain the fluid out, but again, why? He just hasn't seen any trans problems (due to the fluid).
He (the mechanic) did caution that the transfer case will need oil....it gets hot and the oil goes away. Very expensive fix. So my estimation was that I will trust this guy because all of the information from the other owners here verify his statements. So, find a way to change the transfer case, and don't spend a lot of time worrying about the trans fluid.
So, I changed my transfer case fluid myself, (it was dry), and I left the trans alone. Even a very experienced mechanic will struggle with the tansfer case fluid if you don't provide the right kind of tubing/valves to get the fluid in the case. There is plenty of info in this forum to determine what needs done.
Just my humble (cough) opinion....

After reading quite a bit here and at Steve Hannes blog, I can now change the fluid in all 3 gear boxes ( transfer case, manual trans, and the rear differential) in an afternoon. The first time I did it it took the whole afternoon, but now I have all the tools and I know exactly what to do. I bought the car with 80,000 miles on it so I took heed of all the great advice on this forum.
I happen to be pretty mechanically inclined, not a mechanic, but I don't want any bullsh*t with this car over $50 worth of fluids and an afternoon of labor. If anyone needs advice/instruction on the above, I'm happy to help out. The guys with automatics can buy the WB kit to do the trans, but honestly the tools/parts to do all 3 gear boxes run around $25.
