I've read through the forums and can't find this problem.

My car is stuck in park. With the break off, the safety lock is engaged as it should be and doesn't budge. With the break down the safety lock disengages and I can move the lever as far as it being in reverse with resistance but the R doesn't light up and gears don't change. The P lights up. No engine lights or codes.

Any suggestions?

 

Sounds like a shift linkage problem - either at the gear lever end or at the transmission. I believe you'll be able to see the transmission connection underhood, but you may have to remove the battery. If it's the gear lever end you'll have to access the mechanism in center console.
