Default Lock doors via thumb on door handle

I was always able to lock my 2017 XE by pressing my thumb on either driver-side or passenger-side front door handle. Suddenly nothing happens when I do that. Any ideas as to how to restore that function?

Thanks!

Can the key fob lock and unlock the car? I’d suspect the fob battery first.

The fob battery is new, and the fob locks and unlocks the doors and trunk without fail.

Do you get the same problem with the spare key?

I have to touch my door handles very accurately in the "dimple" to make them work, but touching any door will open all of the others.

Hope you get a cheap solution

Excellent question! I will check the next time I go to my car (probably on the weekend).

If you hold the back of the door handle with your fingers while pressing the dimple in the front with your thumb, the doors will not lock, because holding the back of the handle unlocks them.
I've found myself absent-mindidly doing this and wondering why the doors won't lock. You need to keep all parts of your hand away from the rear of the coor handle when locking the doors.
I'm not saying this is the problem but it may be worth giving it a try.
You can also disable and re-enable keyless locking as follows:Disabling

· Open driver’s door

· Ensure key fob is inside the car

· Press headlight flash button 3 times

· Then press unlock button once

Re-enabling

· Open driver’s door

· Ensure key fob is inside the car

· Press headlight flash button 3 times

· Press lock button once

Thank you! The directions you cited for reactivating the door handle lock capability, while in no way intuitive, worked perfectly!

That's awesome - first I've heard that keyless entry could be switched off. Thanks for posting Chris!

Just a quick comment here about the touch lock/unlock feature. On my 2022 XE, when I come to lock I find, sometimes, one touch locks the doors, a second touch emits a muted “clunk” and a third beeps and activates the alarm. Other times it only takes two touches. Anyone else has experienced that?

A change to a comment above about unlocking: One touch on the driver’s only unlocks the driver’s door. One touch on any of the other doors opens all doors. Excellent comment above about enabling or disabling the function.

I think you can change the "one touch on the driver door handle only unlocks the driver door" to unlocking all doors using one of the menus accessed from the steering wheel buttons.
