Default Door lock

Hi all.
I have a very odd problem with my drivers door internal handle. The car is an '03 4.2 XJ.
On engaging gear the doors lock as normal. However if I then try to open my door it will not unlock even if i try pulling the lock handle manually. It will unlock as normal via the switch on the dashboard or if the passenger door is opened first. Even more strange is that if I lock it manually with the lock handle before engaging gear and driving off it will then function as normal????
Bit out of my depth with the one. Just wondering if anyone else has come across this?
Many thanks in advance.

It could be a problem with the cable between the handle and the driver's door lock.

I suggest that you remove door cards (driver's door) and have a look.

There is no adjustment

The driver's door lock is different to the others since it has four switches in addition the
microswitch which operates the door.
The passenger has two and the rear none.
These switches are the slider type where a contact wipes a track and these can wear out
until there is no contact.
I can only imagine that this is the root cause hence you could try replacing the lock but it will not be cheap.
NB it's only an educated guess on my part.

I have had the same problem & have had to replace three of the four door locks. Unfortunately, they are expensive, & there is not much point in fitting a second hand part as it may also fail quickly. Sorry to be passing on bad news

WRT the switches in the door actuators the slider switches are lock status

switches and are integral to the locks unlike the microswitch

which I have replaced a number of times.

I have a fault on my driver's door.

It works fine with the remote but when I unlock it

manually with the key it beeps and will then set the alarm

unless I inset the key in the ignition.

This is because one of the status switches has not 'told'

the security system that a key has been used.
