Default Wi-Fi Hotspot

Is a sim chip necessary for a 2017 XE to create a usable Wi-Fi hotspot? I can access my car’s hotspot, but it doesn’t have an internet connection. I do not have a sim chip or an AT&T account.

I had hoped that the car would run a hotspot off of the internet access from my iPhone, but that does not seem to be the case.

Thank you.

2017

Thank you.
Works for me - I establish a wifi hotspot on my android phone. Both my 2017 XE Incontrol Touch (10" screen) and an unused iiphone with no service (dedicated for Apple Car Play) in the armest glovebox both connect - takes a couple minutes. I set it up a while ago but I think it was under "connections" in the setup menu. No need to use the car sim card for internet access.

I’m not sure that is quite the same as using the car’s own hotspot feature, but it is surely better than nothing!
Thanks!

You're right. Was addressing his problem about creating a wifi hotspot with his iphone not the car.

Actually it might be better as your might have 5G with the iphone - not so sure about sim chip in the car.

When I bought the car (August, 2016) it would only accept a 3G chip.

Is the cell phone hotspot any stronger when run through the car? Or might one just as well rely solely on the phone’s hotspot?

Good question. I just went out and ran a bandwidth speedtest using the web browser on my InControl touch in my car and then compared it to the iphone I also have connected. Both showed approx 16.9 Mbs download speed. Seems like the limiting factor on download speed was my android hotspot (which is not 5g) and possibly due to my signal strength. Not sure what the max download speed on the car wifi is. Will have to check at different locations to find out max download speed.

Just curious if anyone has run a bandwidth speedtest on the Jaguar when connected to a WiFi hotspot or thru a Sim card ? if so what download speeds are you getting.

I have a 2017 XE R-sport with the 10 inch incontrol touch pro with a de-activated Sim card. I get around 16.9 Mbps down when the car is connected to my Android phone Wifi Hotspot. Running a bandwidth speedtest on my Android phone (not 5G) shows approx the same download speed so evidently my phone is the limiting factor. Of course 16.9 Mbps is sufficient for streaming music but curious about the capability of the car wifi.

Booklaw 1 - in order to get your car connected to the wifi hotspot on your iphone make sure the iphone hotspot is set for 2.4ghz and not 5 ghz. I am pretty sure the car wont recognize 5ghz wifi networks.
