Default '11 XF Premium - Abrupt gear change when stopping

A big howdy from Texas! The past month or so I've noticed that when I'm almost to a full stop, my XF jerks like it's changing gears from 2 to 1. It became so bad the past couple of days that I've resorted to manual shifting so that it starts and stops on 2.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? What's frustrating is that it's intermittent. I'm concerned that when I bring the car to the dealer they will say that they can't replicate the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

That sounds like "The Lurch". It's a ZF transmission thing, although I didn't know it happened on the newer cars. I'm fairly certain the new cars still use a ZF tranny...

I get the same thing. Funny thing is I never even noticed it the first year or so that I had the car.

I can confirm that my 2010 XF Premium exhibits exactly the same thing. I have complained to the dealer and they came back with the fact that all is normal. It seems to occur, for me, when I come to a slow stop from a reasonably high speed. It always happens in the final moment of the stop. It is exacerbated by the brakes that need careful modulation to get a smooth stop.

I always drive mine in Dynamic Mode with the trans in S and use the paddle shifters, the car always come to stop in 2nd gear, if I manually shift it down to first once it is stopped I do feel it select 1st gear. Seems like it wants to take off actually and the brakes are holding it stationary. Starting from a stand still in second gear actually works very well with a nice smooth start and you can hold the gear longer, 1st gear on these cars seems very short.

Just experienced this and particularly when putting into park it lurches. Also experience what 09XFSuper describes. I attribute it to the 470 horses trying to get loose. Will likely bring it up with the dealer at some point.

This is a known ZF characteristic ( some say fault) which both ZF and Jaguar say is normal. The thump ranges from imperceptible to fairly noticable without any pattern.

I notice it more when I decelerate slowly, brake gently, as in rush hour crawl. Doesn't feel unhealthy. Just downshifting early enough to give a boost to engine braking.

Our 2003 Honda Odyssey had a tranny failure at 60kmi. It started "slam shifting". My wife thought she was rear-ended. If yours shifts violently, then you likely have a real problem.

Appreciate the quick responses to my question. Lurch seems like a good name for it. I was in stop and go traffic two days ago and it was very noticeable. Maybe I need to change how I brake - slam it vs. modulated stop. . Will let you know what dealer says when I bring it in

The older 5 spd version of this tranny suffered a severe form of this fault requiring replacement of the torque converter and its controls.

Unhappy Abrupt gear change when stopping

I have the same issue with my 2009 Premium Luxury model with 38K miles. Are there enough of us to make a united case to Jaguar? It's a terrible defect for such a modern expensive car.

Search my recent posts, I also have this issue.

Some say a full reset/reboot from all tranny and engine Control units from the dealer will fix it but it did not with mine.

It sucks. If Jaguar could fix the tranny and sunroof issues, the car would be much more enjoyable.

It isn't a defect, officially. It is a characteristic of the lock up clutch in this design of transmission. They all do it to some degree. It may depend on how you like to drive given the adaptive software. The 8 spd may be smoother.

I have mentioned this in the past but I had the adaptive transmission reset by my dealer and it completely fixed the problem for me. I would try that and see if that would work.

Aaron,
I had the dealer reset the adaptive trans - its not as bad but still doing it - weirdly there appears to be no "pattern" to the problem. sometimes it does it sometimes it don't.
What does the future hold for this problem - will it get worse or better - who knows-

This is not acceptable from someone that has had at least a dozen Jaguars and Mercedes.
Does it justify - buy american???
By the way my car is a 2009 in lunar grey with grey interior - a real looker especially with the 19 inch wheels.

Hey Rocco. I want to tell you mine got progressively better but I don't think it did really. Maybe slightly but unnoticeable really. I had it reset and it stopped almost immediately however would still do it maybe once on a 30 minute drive through the city. It is definitely down to about once every 5th time I get in the car so maybe it is still "learning" or maybe I am? Nonetheless I hate to say it but it fixed the problem for me.

I know what you mean though, this being my first Jaguar I anticipated nothing like this (although fixed now) it was surprising at first. When I initially brought up the issue with dealer they mentioned how this is common with the Jaguar as well as Land Rover (certain models but can't remember which they said) however still doesn't excuse it.

I guess you can see mine in my picture but lunar grey with black interior and 20" Selena's. Can't say I have had a ton of lookers, it doesn't catch your eye but once you focus on it you can't turn away. I have parked it outside restaurants and have seen people walk around it admiring it which is a new experience for me. I am interested to see some pictures of your especially with the grey interior.

Thanks for the update.

Aaron

I think this is the internal lock up clutch releasing or engaging. This is a characteristic of the ZF transmission. North Americans are fitting this transmission to a lot of "domestic" vehicles because it is so efficient. Ford uses a variant in their F150 for example.
