Default 2009-2010 XF pre purchase questions

Hello, I am new to this forum. I have a few questions before i pull the trigger on a 2009-2010 XF. In my price range, I would be able to afford the standard 4.2 v8 or a high miler 4.2 supercharged. Are these good engines. What would you recommend? I am young so I really won't have the money to pay for major breakdowns. If I do end up with the base 4.2, Are there any mods I can do to speed up up a little? Like a cold air intake, exhaust to make it sound more like a V8 should, maybe even a tune? Is the rest of the car reliable? Can these last past 100k miles? I have seen a lot with over 70k miles. Anything to lookout for when inspecting one of these on the lot?

Thanks!

You may want to look for a 10 Premium with the 5.0.

They have 85 more ponies than the 4.2 NA and only a few less than the SC 4.2.

Look for. CPO car and it will be fully warranted for 100K or 6 years, and Jag will finance you at .9%.

Cant really find one in my price range at a dealer. Looking for $25k and under. Probably going to end up with a 4.2 NA V8. Are there mods out there for it? Intake, exhaust, tune? Is the XF a reliable car? Don't want to end up paying for large repairs.

The way it sounds, you probably will not want to buy a luxury car. If you are this worried about repairs and trying to get a jag for as low as possible, I think the service is going to kill you. But if you do decide to get an 09 anyway, yes there is an intake for the 4.2l engine only, and there is an exhaust. I'm not sure what cars you had before, but the exhaust might be a little expensive compared to what you're used to. Maybe the intake also, Im not sure because I have the 5.0 and there's no intake for them. You can get a tune, but again, luxury cars mean it's going to cost twice the price for a result you might not be happy with, especially if you are buying an NA car. But again if you do buy the jag, the best advice I could give you is, leave it alone. It's a beautiful car as is, it don't need to be modded. Trust me, I'm a new owner also, and also coming from the tuner world. I don't even know if I'm going to get rims for this car.

Go for an older jag with full service history, some cracking deals and lovely cars, keep some cash in the bank and enjoy.

Mine cost me 6k with 100k on clock full service history. i can imagine you could get a well minted car for 15k mark, worth considering

Probably going to get one at an auction. They go really cheep there. Just wondering if the XF is a reliable car or should I look elsewhere. Don't want things to break every week.

Spring for the XF Supercharged if you can. It comes with nearly every option on top of the extra power. The 4.2L NA or SC is a great motor. They have used it for a very long time meaning it will have more aftermarket support and cheaper parts. If you are already planning on upgrading the 4.2L NA for more power just pay extra for the 4.2L SC version. You won't squeak much out of the 4.2L NA motor. With the 4.2L SC you have supercharger pulley upgrades available.

Common XF issues: (Top 4 are pretty common)
-Dash ripples = Adhesive fails after heat/cold cycling and it is very expensive to pay the dealer to fix. Look into DIY fix (pull dash and have upholster fix).
-Gear selector knob fault / trans fault / won't shift out of park = poor solder joint on gear selector board. Should have been fixed under recall/TSB.
-Slight jerk when coming to a stop when trans downshifts = It is annoying and most that have the issue haven't reported a fix
-Battery drain = Always lock car when not in use and trickle charge battery when left sitting for more than a week. Dealer software updates were supposed to help shut the entertainment system down sooner to reduce battery drain.

-TPMS issues = dash lights for tire pressure issues (usually not a pressure issue)
-Air vents out of sync when car is turned on or one not functioning
-Leaking rear diff at axles seals = Jag redesigned the original rear diff/axles and it is expensive to upgrade out of warranty ($9,500 based on a recent post)
-Brittle/broken head light mounts

Ok. Most issues I'm fine with. I'm sure $9500 to fix a diff leak will scare off most luxury car buyers, not just me. Is it a common problem? How is the service on these cars? I don't mind paying $100-150 for an oil change at the dealer. But will the car eat tires and brakes? Wonder how much brakes are for it, along with a new battery. Debating between a Jaguar XF, Ford Taurus SHO, or Mustang GT for next car.

My dealer tech said I should keep an eye on the diff (look for leaking around axles). There aren't many posts about diff issues on the forums so I'd say it's rare.

Brakes and tires will be more than the Ford cars but similar or less than other comparable cars (Audi, BMW, Merc).

If your max budget is really $25k with no room left for any repairs, etc, then I'd think long and hard about getting an XF. While the XFs have better reliability than past Jaguars, there are still a few issues with them (computer resets, tire pressure sensors, water pumps, fuel line issues, etc.). While you may have seen XFs with high mileage on them, I'd bet most of that mileage was put on the car while it was under warranty. If you find a good deal on a XF, maybe go for it, but be sure to get a good warranty with it. Fixing issues with these cars are not cheap. Like other members here said, you'd be better of making sure you got a certified pre-owned vehicle, but like you said, hard to find one under 25k. I personally wouldn't get an XF unless it was under warranty, but that's just me. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

I found a 2011 XF Premium certified pre owned at a dealer near me. Has 47k on the odometer but it has the 6 year 100k mile warranty. Has the 5.0L V8. Asking $31k for it. Think it is a good deal? I am willing to pay more for a CPO car because of the warranty. That takes care of things like a leaking diff and other issues with the car. Called and asked how much a brake job all around was for it (I hear that the XF eats brakes, is this true?) They wanted around $950. I thought that was crazy for brakes.

That is a good price for that car if there are no major blemishes.

I got my 10 premium for $34,900 with 35k 15 months ago.

If the car is a CPO, and being offered by a Jag dealer, then it should have new breaks and tires as per the recertification program.

They have to get the car in "new" condition with all factory parts installed (no aftermarket wheels and such".

My 10 now has 55k on it and the only few things that went wrong were fixed without complaint. And it is still running great. I plan on driving mine right to the 100k mark or Summer 2016 (which ever comes first) and trading it in for another CPO, maybe and F-Type

Also, with 20k miles on my brakes, they are still 50%. And I drive aggressively.

I don't think CPO needs to have 'new' brakes and tyres - just above a specified condition. We bought our Land Rover CPO (from the same dealer as my Jag) and the tyres only did another 7000 miles before they were shot.

On brakes, think it completely depends how you drive. It sounds like 20k is plenty achievable, but I know from CarFax that the original owner of mine had to replace them at just 5000 miles then again at 15k...

Good luck!

Alright. Got the maintenance questions sorted out. Now to the infotainment system. Can I stream music to the car via Bluetooth or do I have to use an aux cord?

The system on the 2009/11 at least (not sure about the 2012 that has a newer system) does not allow BT streaming of music. You can pair the phone for voice calls etc, but not music. Options are either to plug in an ipod into the center armrest connector to do music, or if you want 'live' via your phone from pandora / spotify etc then see this recent post yesterday

I don't have this device but according to the post it works well on the Jag, and it does get rave reviews on Amazon

Good luck!
