Default 2009 Jag XF - Reliability

Folks,

Been meaning to get a Jag for quite some time now.

Found a deal locally: 2009 Jag XF Luxury V8 with 41600 miles. Are these cars reliable when bought used?

Currently I drive 2009 Infiniti M45x

Help is greatly appreciated.

See this post here. Seems like a differential issue is fairly common on the 09's and very expensive out of warranty. If you're getting a used XF, I'd recommend getting one that has at least some factory warranty left. There are some here that have a 100k+ miles on their cars and they are fine , and then there are others like the post I linked to. It's up to you what chance you are willing to take. Unless you're somewhat mechanically inclined, I think Jags are too expensive to fix out of warranty.

I know a lot of people have the mentality that the more money they spend on a vehicle, the more reliable it should be and that is really not the case. You're spending more money to get a more luxurious complicated vehicle.

Again, if it's my money, I'd buy an XF with a factory warranty, but it's up to you. I'd rather have peace of mind than be in the situation as the poster in the link above. I understand that may put an XF out of your price range...especially if you're stretching your budget to get a used XF without a warranty, it's probably not the best car for you.

I'd say not so much but that's just based on my experience. Less than two months of ownership and it needs a new diff, fuel filler door, tranny cooler lines, tranny pan gasket about $10K worth of repairs (of course that's dealer prices). My B5 S4 wasn't this bad and it was bad. Get one with a factory or a Good aftermarket (if there is such a thing) warranty. But overall I do like the car a lot.

Look for a 2011,. They have five year factory warranty.

I had a 2009 SC and it didn't have any problems except for the sticking fuel door and a rare startup software glitch that was always solved by restarting the car. If the price is low enough, see if you can get an extended factory warranty if the dealer will certify the car or an aftermarket warranty. Blrx7r1 below just reported in a different post that all his problems were fixed by his aftermarket warranty except for the fuel door.

To be fair you are one of the very few to post about the diff issue. I wouldn't say it's common. A common issue would be battery drain or leather issues on the dash which is common on all models years 09+. I don't recall anyone ever posting about a tranny pan gasket/cooler lines. I'd chalk that up to bad luck or possibly a car that was driven harder than normal.

My B7 S4 ate so much oil that I'll never go back to Audi. Audi said it was within spec for the 4.2L V8 to burn 1-2 qts per 1k miles... That was ridiculous. I thought about upgrading to a B7 RS4 but after some research I found out that they suffer from carbon build up (valve area) that rob 100hp after 10k miles.

Toyota said the same thing about the MR2 spyder. I fought them for months until they replaced my engine. Once they did that, no more oil loss. No engine should be burning oil significantly. Turns out there was a block problem that causes oval bores. Toyota never did a recall, but they did change the blocks on their new spyders 2 - 3 years later. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that experience.

So far I've been blessed with minimal issues to my '09. They did recommend differential "cleaning" which I took advantage of and it appeared to be in good shape. The only real issue I've had is with a cracked coolant resevoir and the all too common bubbling dash but both issues were fixed with no out of pocket expense under my extended "Jag Select" warranty and the dash by the "good faith policy" of the dealership. Other than those issues again I've been blessed.

Also in being fair, the diff issue in the '09's was enough that several (5-6) TSB's were issued. So it obviously had to be more than just a 'very few' cars affected. Let's just say it's a known issue and I got bit by it. It's just one data point but something that should be considered when looking at '09 XF's. Also, mine does suffer from some of the more common issues, fuel filler door, and bubbly dash. Still with all that, I can't wait to get it back.
