So today was the day I decided to start going after a loose rear wheel bearing.
First thing: rear axle nut on 2011 Jaguar XFR is 36mm (probably 35.5 but 36 worked)
Make sure all the bolts were pre lubricated which made taking the brake caliper and bracket off really easy.
Now I am stuck on the wheel hub. Things I have broken so far:
One ratchet
One 3 arm puller
One 3 foot breaker bar
One socket
One wrench
And most recently the head of the puller itself
So now I have another ratchet, a new socket and a 10 foot bar to try and pull this damn hub. Also bought PB Blaster shares for the amount I'm using.
Going by the workshop manual the clip doesn't need to be removed before the hub bearing but perhaps I'm missing something?
So an update to this thread and my 2011 Jaguar XFR that is looking for a human sacrifice for this wheel bearing..
Broke more ratchets, and more pullers. Ordered a 15 ton hydraulic and it didn't move it.
Changed plans to remove the entire knuckle with the half shaft and take it somewhere to have it pressed out.
My issue now however is that it looks like I will need to cut the left top control arm nut off the ball joint, image attached shows it as number 13 for a replacement nut, does anyone have a part number by chance for it?
The workshop manual advises for a new oil seal for the half axle as well. Is this mandatory (such as the axle nut) or just a best practice?
Yikes… I’m not even going to mess with that. I’m taking it right to a shop lol
Yea I decided last night that I'm not going to take out the half axle, mark it as a failure on my DIY skills and take it to a mechanic.
The axle with a few good tugs wasn't coming out as laid out by the workshop manual so I don't want to break it or the differential.
Going to put everything back together and since the shop is around the corner (0.2km) I am hoping I can drive it over.
Also going to provide a print out of the instructions from the workshop manual (since they aren't Jag specialists) and a list of my thought process and everything I tried on it.
A warning to all who want to do a wheel bearing, you better have all of the pro tools and an oxy/ace flame to even start to attempt and even then some garages have given up on these in the past....fml
I had the same problem with right rear hub .I soaked it in wd for three days using hub puller in your photo but i used impact gun and 5 lb sledge hammer tightening puller hitting with sledge and retightening ,took a while but i got it off and cleaned everything up and installed new bearing with no more problems .Patience is a key when working on rusted parts
I always take off the complete knuckle and press it out. Anything less is a complete PITA as you have already found. You'll also need a decent size snap ring tool the remove snap ring. Then pressing the bearing in and out is the last fun step. Press is definitely needed.
