Default air intake damage

the metal part of the air intake where the plastic intake attaches to the throttle body is broken. is this an issue or common?

I had the same issue with my 2013 XF, it’s the 5.0 supercharged model. I replaced my intake with a Mina Intake, that was my solution.

Lots of debate and discussion over the years about Mina intakes, cone filters / supposed CAI, K&N v stock filters etc and the bottom line (and supported by my experience across XFR and F-Type) seems to be:
- for a system like that fitted to the XF with the airboxes in the engine bay fed by intake snorkels under the leading edge of the hood/bonnet, a cone filter set-up like the Mina one does not improve power/torque/horsepower at all and most probably reduces all of them as it turns out to be a "hot air intake".
- but it does release a sizeable whack of SC whine (due to the deletion of the stock Helmholtz resonators).
- K&N air filters also make zero difference to hp, torque or performance as they flow no better than the already very good stock filters.
- however on a system like the F-Type and XKR with the airboxes mounted low down behind the front wheels, replacing the stock airboxes with cone filters doesn't reduce power/torque/performance and possibly improves all of them slightly, and you get a big increase in SC whine (I have the Mina lower intake set up with cone filters on the F-Type but the stock upper intake set-up).
