buy 2013 3.0 S/C with damaged engine
Hi guys
I was offered a 2013 XF 3.0 S/C with damaged engine. The previous owner killed the crankshaft on the original engine (have no details to what happened). Then he bought a replacement engine and had it installed by a friend - who ****ed up the timing, resulting in bent valves and broken cylinder liners.
That's the story I hear, I haven't seen the car yet.
Question 1:
Is the 3.0 V6 S/C particular fragile? I'm asking because the car had only 83000km when the first engine was killed, and I wonder why that happened. If the reason was poor maintenance and / or tuning then I'll walk away from this car, even at the offered 5000bucks.
Question 2
Are the 3.0 V6 S/C engines interchangeable from other Jaguars without having to move too much electronics? I want to avoid to mess with the engine ECU as this is all nestled together with the rest of the car
Question 3:
are there any known issues with these cars, especially with transmission?
I consider myself as knowledgeable with car mechanics as well as electronics. I already transplanted engines, do my own maintenance on all my cars and also do restorations, right now working on an 1955 XK140 and doing spring maintenance of my 2000 XKR.
Thanks,
Chris

Yeah, there are engines around, but what bothers me is the fact that the engine of this car blew up with 80000km already. Seems a bit early.
If the reason was excessive tuning then also the tranny and diff may be affected.
This is a ZF tranny right? Is it as sensitive as in the XK8, or are they better?
Thanks,
Chris

Hey buddy,
I've gone through a 2013 XF 3.0/SC engine and had it all replaced recently. I had to have the transmission and engine replaced and it is quite costly, running around $8000 CAD for the Engine+Transmission setup itself, plus whatever labour rates for installing the engine and having it reconfigured for your vehicle.
Look around on car-part.com for used XF engines, you'll find that 2013-2015 XF's and XJ's have the same engine.

Thanks for all the helpful answers!
I let it go after talking to the owner. He wasn't very clear, but from what I understand the first engine blew up because of (unprofessional) attempts to increase power. To me it was clear that the engine is not the only thing that suffered on that car.
Cheers
