Default Car Max anyone ??

I stopped by a CarMax today and saw what they had for the first time. Are their prices too high ? They had a beautiful black XJ that was supercharged and were asking $57K and also a drop-dead gorgeous XK (reddish…maroonish ?) that was an 2013 with 23k miles and asking $36K( ??) Both cars were immaculate, but what blew me away was their extended warranty policies . These policies were really extended to 150k miles and 6-7 years from the purchase date…..not sure of the prices. BTW, this place is in Escondido,Calif..

There must be a mistake; no way a 2013 XK should sell for $36K, unless it has a bad, salvage title. Seems to me that their prices are generally competitive with major brand dealers. When I asked them for a purchase estimate for my 2012 XJL with 14K miles, they offered only $47K for it, while having a nearly identical year and mileage XJL for sale for $59K. That is far too much spread.

Carmax don't sell salvaged cars. they pretty much will only sell a car that could be sold as a CPO. They do have good warranties, which is why they are usually more expensive.

I had a friend who purchased a Cadillac XLR from them. It was a Special numbered edition and was at a lower price than most dealers here wanted for them. They had to pick it up in Toledo and shipped it here. He gave a small deposit and was told if he didn't like the car, they would refund it. The car was in near perfect shape. I can't say that I have delt with them but he had a great experience with them.

a friend of mine has been a mechanic there for years and he really likes the company. When I was looking for my jag, I noticed that they get many of their cars from Manhiem auction -- but they were usually some of the better quality ones. Prices were always better than the car would be at other dealers back then.

I've read that Carmax is surprisingly good about honoring their warranties and making neccesary repairs.

Here was a very interesting Jalopnik story that relates to us especially because it's a JLR car.

I purchased a 2012 XF Supercharged with 11,000 miles for 48K last August and have been very happy with the purchase. When doing research I found at that time most 2012 XF SC with similar mileage were approx 52K. Not sure if I overpaid but I have absolutely no complaints. I did get the warranty which I should have held off on since the car was still under Jaguar warranty. Oh well live and learn.

I sold my X-Type to Carmax about two years ago since they offered 30% more than my local dealership did. They didn't have a current model year XF on the lot but I certainly would have given them consideration if they did. They don't take any cars with modifications done to them so I doubt they would take my XF with the Mina exhaust. That said I won't be looking to trade up until 2018 time frame anyways.
