Check Engine Light
Hello everyone,
I'm a new member with a 2008 XF (4.2) supercharged.
Since October 2010, the check engine light has been coming on on average once a month. I know that the issue can be related to dozens of different items but the fact that the light is coming on seems to indicate that there are multiple problems with the vehicle.
We are very disappointed since we love this car so much. Other than this issue which has become a monthly nightmare, we've had no problems with the vehicle.
Has anyone else suffered so many issues with the engine?
Sam

The most common cause of recurring CELs is failure to tighten the gas cap adequately after refueling. If you've already ruled out that as a cause, then we need to know more. Does the CEL go away by itself after driving the car? If so, does it go out after a period of miles driven or seem tied to number of on/off cycles? If it hasn't gone out on its own, how have you had "once a month" CELs? Has the dealer cleared it? If you've not had the dealer look into this, you should wait until you get your next CEL and then take it in. CELs should not be common on any car.

The gas cap is tight.
The CEL does not go away. It's been into the dealer 5 times in almost as many months. They keep the car for 3/4 days, plug it in and check the codes. They do whaever is necessary (added additives to the fuel (?), catalytic converter not working correctly, missing seal around oil dipstick (they do all services(!)), misfiring cylinders etc etc) and return it. Then a few weeks later the CEL comes on and back it goes.
This weekend the CEL came on during a normal drive and we've decided that we've had enough. The dealers aren't getting to the bottom of it and Jaguar is no help.
It's so frustrating that I've today contacted an attorney. I didn't want to since we did love the car but even my wife (whose car it is) now wants rid of it due to the CEL issue.

Yow. Sounds like a lemon. I think if >3 trips to dealer and they can't fix the problem they have to take the car back. It's really a good car; you just got a bad example. See if you can get them to take it back and give you a replacement. See Lemon Law Advice » What is a Lemon Law? Good luck!

Sounds like it could be a wiring problem. I recall that some of the early model Jags had a problem with the engine wiring harness somewhere near the drivers side front wheel well. The harness would wear through and cause various occasional computer errors. There were also problems with some of the grounds used in the electrical system becoming intermittent. I think there were TSBs for both problems.
Thanks.
