Common Issues
Hi guys, I am thinking to buy XF 3 V6 2008 this year, I am looking for an information about common issues with an engine and transmission, also considering 4.2 V8 (not supercharged). Anyone's ever heard about any of these problems?
The 4.2 V8 NA was also used in the S-Type and has proven there to have no common issues at all. Change oil+filter, it just works.
The trans needs normal service (oil+filter+sleeve) and is good.
If the 3.0 is the diesel I think then it has worries as it's much higher tech and needs frequent long trips. See what others say but I'd get the 4.2 V8 NA.

I only consider petrol engines - no diesels
I do only 3 miles a day so fuel consumption is not a problem. I haven't found any common issues at all, this is great. I was considering BMW 5 f10 2011 2.0 D (thought about my first diesel) but a lot of people have problems with a timing chain - I got back to my previous choice - XF.

Search the forums here for lots of posts on common issues and experiences. Both the 4.2 and the 5.0 engine themselves seem to be very reliable. The 2009 4.2 cars appear to be suffering some transmission issues - not very common but quite a few on here and an expensive 10k fix... Some niggling issues on the 2009 as the first model year although likely ironed out by now if well cared for
2010 onwards seems to be mostly water pumps that seem to fail regularly (4-5 years or as soon as 30k miles). Not hard to replace though
I'd go for a SC model for better suspension, sound system, well equipped and the power. The 2009 and 2010 SC models are very reasonable priced for what they are
Like all high performance cars they will cost money to maintain over time. But that's to be expected. Some people get extended warranty to provide some comfort

If you're in the uk the V6 will be kinder on the wallet given petrol prices. My understanding is reliability is good. Diesel is an option in uk too

There is a common issue I have found that I have had issues with on both my XF cars.
I find that it is very hard to remove the smile from my face while driving. Also hard to keep from turning back to look at the car while walking away.
Another one is I am constantly having to say "thank you" to others as they compliment you on your Jaaagggg. (Even when it is very dirty at the gas station)

I think the petrol 3.0 & 4.2 NA are almost the same as in the S-Type. Almost the same MPG and irrelevant anyway for low mileage.
Both are solid engines.
You'll love the 4.2 a lot more, if you try one - you've been warned
