Default Coolant level gauge

Hello,

I have just purchased a 2010 Jaguar XF and have noticed that there is no visual coolant level gauge on the dashboard. Every other car I have has had this as I really need to see if the engine is over heating whilst I'm driving. Does the XF actually have one?

Use the OBD port with a Bluetooth scanner linked to your smartphone to determine the coolant temperature. Torque app is able to give you many engine parameters and can show pending and set DTCs. It's a free download from Google Play Store.

Post your enquiry in the X250 forum. This is the X200 forum for S-Types from 1999 to 2008.

Congrats on the car. Hope you love it. I've had my 2010 XF SC for about 6 years now and it has been wonderful

There is no coolant gauge nor engine oil temp. In theory you will get a temp warning if the engine is too hot but a few people have said they lost coolant and overheated with no warning. And overheating an Alu block engine is not good
So check coolant level regularly and look out for leaks. Lots of plastic pipes and joins which can age and fail over time,.,
Check water pump too / they can fail after as little as 20k miles and the earlier replacements also went on to fail too

Thanks for the reply. A bit odd that there is no visual aid to look at on the dash. I thought I had posted this with the correct forum but it appears not to be the case

Thanks for the response. I find that very strange that a coolant temperature gauge has not been included within the instrument panel. So you get a message when things have gone wrong as opposed to seeing things happening and therefore acting accordingly?

Is there a certain Bluetooth scanner you would recommend?

Most of the gauges on current generation cars are little more than idiot lights anyway. Basically, they look analog but work more like a light. You keep saying coolant level but I'm not aware of any current generation car shipping with a coolant level gauge, only coolant temp and, as noted, they are mostly junk. There are OBDII multi-gauges you can buy and I updated my XKR with gauges that worked but it wasn't a cheap date. Here is an example of an OBDII multi-gauge but there are tons of them in the market.

There are also OBDII heads up multi display projectors with coolant temperature display on ebay.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has installed one as to the readability during daylight driving please ?

I tried one a couple of years ago and it was rubbish, invisible in the weakest of sunlight.

Some Jaguar models such as the X200, are fitted with a coolant temperature gauge, but the gauge doesn't show any temperature increase from 86 C to 129 C. If you reach 129 C, most AJV8 engines become very unhappy and often shed their valve seats.

I'm going to give the Ancel A501 OBDII smart displays a try because I have some concerns over my cooling system and summer is nearly upon us here in South Australia.

It does much more than just coolant temperature, the price is reasonable, it has programmable alarm points for the important parameters. If not a successful venture, it can be easily removed via the windscreen suction cup and transferred to one of my other vehicles.

I picked one up on the bay for under $70AUD delivered.

There is a coolant level sensor in the expansion tank and from memory it is meant to trigger a "low coolant" warning if the level drops lower than 2 litres below full (the whole system that is, not just the expansion tank level).
It worked well on my F-Type when I had a coolant leak a few months ago and possibly saved me from cooking the engine.
Conversely the XF coolant level sensor is notorious for giving false warnings when the float conks out from old age and sinks to the bottom of the tank!

Jag doesn't have an oil pressure gauge either. There isn't even a sensor for a scan tool to use. To check oil pressure, you have to remove the oil filter and replace it with a special jaguar tool.

This is true, and makes me wonder how useful the OBD II gauges on the market could be. Certainly would be great if anyone has used one to list what sensors and gauges will have readings and which ones will not.

Torque Pro can be used to monitor:
  • Coolant temperature
  • Battery voltage
  • RPM
  • STFT
  • LTFT
  • Inlet air temperature
  • Acceleration
Just to list a few.
