Engine Overheating Warning + limp mode
Today I let my Jag idel for about 5 min, then drove it with gusto for about 2 blocks. Turned it off for 5 min, then attempted to merge into traffic. As I mashed the gas expecting a 0-60 in 4.3 merge I got limp mode and almost got hit by other cars who were extremely annoyed at me pulling in front of them and barely accelerating.
The center between the speedo and tach said in bright red, WARNING Engine Overheating wiht a red triangle above it. I limped into a gas station popped the hood and looked at the coolant resevor, its in between full cold and full hot? No obvious leaks, and the car ran the fan the entire 10 min at the gas station.
I got back in and drove another 30 miles to work with zero issues.
Whatcha all think?

Turning off any car quickly after a hard run is going to cause maximum heat stress to the engine. You need to give the cooling system some time to shed the heat load generated. This is an issue XJ-S owners have to deal with routinely, because the stock cooling is barely adequate to keep up with the V-12.
If it's running fine now you're probably in the clear and just tripped a switch when a plug of hot coolant came out of the engine. I wouldn't sweat it, but try and give the car a cooldown period for a few minutes before shutting it down after a hot run in the future.
Cheers,

Could be a air pocket in the coolant system that triped it. I seen that happen with my other XF I had.
And a FYI: On these new gen Jags if you want to know if it was a Ghost Fault or a real fault simply pull over, get out and lock the doors and step 5ft or more away from the car for it to go to sleep for 5 minutes. Then approach the car and get in and start it up and see if the fault is cleared. These new ECU have a self clearing feature. Long term memory in the ECU should storethe fault if it was real and can be pulled by the dealer if needed.

I limped it into a gas station parking lot, popped the hood and stood there and gave it a good talking too. I have named my car pumpkin because it has the spice seats and stitching. I'm sure the other folks getting gas enjoyed listening to my pep talk.
Please keep us posted on the status. Will be interesting to hear what the dealership says...

Mine too is getting an overheating warning light but no fluid loss or sign of high engine temps. My fan does not run when this happens. It tries to start a few times. each time the fan turns about an eighth of a turn and then goes off. I already changed the coolant temp sensor. But no clue what to do other than to replace the fan assembly. I suspect that it is the module in the fan but have no way to test it or jumper it so that the fan stays on.
Anybody have any advice on what I can do?

I have been having mild high temp issues and replaced the thermostatic sensor. I did some more testing and the fan just does not come on at all causing the car to overheat in heavy traffic and in the drive thru lines. I ordered a fan and have not gotten it yet. But today because I am tired of waiting for my fan to arrive, i am going to put in an aftermarket auxiliary fan to see what that does. I will let you know the outcome.
This thread was started five years ago, reactivated in 2015, and again now without any known outcome. I guess it can either be false alarm due to sensors failing, or the sensors are right and there is a fault with one or more of the following: thermostat, cooling fans, loose belt, water pump, water hoses.... Engine overheat has serious consequences so don't treat it lightly.
