Default Heating not working 3.0D

Hello everyone, with the amount of work I do on my parents jag I thought I’d create an account here.

Not sure if it’s the correct place to post, feel free to tell me.

So we’re having an issue with the heating in the cabin, blower works fine, vent are all good and the infotainment system works (including the temperature setting). I don’t really know how to diagnose these kind of issues.

Usually I would think of a faulty thermostat but it has just been changed (blew off not long ago). We changed the whole housing that also connect to the egr valve and I think the thermostat is part of it.

what else could it be ? And are there any easy way to diagnose it?
Thanks

The heating doesn’t work in the car, air is freezing cold. I also noticed that the air vent are all stuck open, I’ve checked the setting and it’s ont automatic so it should close when the engine stops.

Seems electrical because they’re all stuck open could it be linked ? Didn’t find any fuse regarding the whole climate system

So, as far as I can tell you do not have heat in the cabin. Now you mention the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, I assume the thermostat is in a plastic housing off the coolant line after the pump like the other models. Now I do not have a 3.0 diesel and I don't know which year this car is but it either sounds like the thermostat or blend door issues. What code popes up if any?

Thanks for the help kkurulak

“Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve” i assumed the thermostat was in that housing.

The car is a 2010, no codes that my reader can see at the moment.
Could the fact that the vents are all stuck be linked ? Seems strange that these two issues happens at the same time.

Does the cold air blow only at your feet ? - check if you can move the air direction, i.e. to face, to defrost, etc.

hi Robinus, thanks for the lead

It is in fact stuck on the face. When I select feet or defrost it does nothing (air keeps blowing through the face vents)

I'm guessing it's the aux heater spiking the canbus.

& here

It's easy enough to get to, so you could unplug it to see if it fixes your problem. If not, plug it back in.

Even if the pre-heater is not working, the car should still heat up. The pre-heater is only fitted in cooler climates as diesels take a time to warm up. You mentioned the thermostat, this is located under the expansion bottle, so maybe this has not been changed?? There is a water outlet on top of the engine in the V, that often splits & it could be this that was replaced. People wrongly often refer to that part as the thermostat housing!

Can I suggest you set the heater on "AUTO" then adjust the temperture up to 22/23, drive the car with those settings & report back if it get not or not!

Good to know for the thermostat, when I bought the part it was referred to as the thermostat but that does seem odd.

ive just finish disconnecting the aux electric heater and that turned out to be the issue, as soon as it was unplugged the vents closed automatically and after driving for a few minutes hot air came out !

i might or might not replace the electric heater as this engine warms up so fast anyway

thanks everyone for the help, should’ve done more research.

This is great news! I would have been busy confirming it it was the thermostat and all along it was the axillary heater. Every day I'm learning something.

To be fair I was pretty sure it had something to do with the cooling system too, a bit weird that something meant to help heating up faster stops the normal heating from working.
But hey, electronics rights?

I still do love the car, when it works...
