2 PROBLEMS
1st issue: Over the last 2 years the car would start perfectly sometimes. Other times I would attempt to start it 2 4 6 8 times before the car started.
2nd issue: Last week the car wouldn’t start and I flattened the battery, immediately the car wouldn’t lock, neither would the car recognise the key in any way and says; “Check Smart Key”
I cannot plug a computer in as the car doesn’t recognise the smart key.
Any suggestions?

- I have charged the car battery
- I have put a new battery in the smart key
- I have inserted the smart key into the slot

Running the battery down with a difficult start seems to induce all manner of errors in these cars. First thing I would try is disconnecting the battery terminal and then reconnecting, this often resets the security system.
I have read that with the battery disconnected, touching the positive and negative cables together resets error codes; I think (not certain) that I have done this successfully in the XF at some stage but can't recall what error I was trying to clear.

+1 to touching terminals together with battery disconnected, I wouldn't do it too often though heard it can confuse ecu.. also remove battery earth from car body end and sand or grind the paint from under the main earth cable. Solved quite a few of my issues. Do the same for any other earth cables you find under bonnet etc.
